Personal Work Experience Personal Work Experience I have always dreamt of a decent white collar job that I would progressively pursue to fulfil my aspirations. Last year I got the opportunity to work with one of the leading financial institutions in my state as a human resource assistant officer. Before commencing the employment, I was euphoric since I had made a positive step towards achieving my long term dreams of securing a competitive job with a leading company. It was my expectations that I would meet a team of dedicated employees who would help me to grow my skills and competencies on the job to enhance my career progression. The first few weeks of my stay at the job were merely a joy ride since I was primarily under orientation programs, so I was not tasked with any particular responsibility but was being taken through how the systems of the organization work and the responsibilities of my position. The colleagues at the workplace were warm and friendly since they would readily offer any assistance and made me feel at home by engaging me in their conversations as well as other typical activities that required collective efforts. Initially, I felt a sense of job satisfaction since that is what I exactly dreamt of before securing this job. However, the comfort that I was accustomed to did not last long since the moment I assumed the duties of my position things took a twist and I started feeling the impact of being responsible for job tasks. Ideally, I was working as an assistant to the human resource first officer and thus was tasked with filing the returns of the company’s employees about leaving days, pension, salaries, and other benefits. In essence, I was dealing with the human resource needs of the employees of the organization and reporting to the first officer in the human resource department. Based on my employment contract my job was an eight-hour shift that commences eight o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the evening working five days a week with the possibility of being required to work extra hours when deemed necessary. Because of the tight schedule of my job shift I used to wake very early in the morning to prepare myself to arrive at work in time to tackle the day’s activities according to my boss’ instruction. Incidentally, I was the youngest employee in the office, and thus my colleagues used to take advantage of my age to bully me by allocating me extra work apart from my designated job. At first I used to accept readily duties from my colleagues on the pretext that they are too busy, and thus they would also relieve me some duties in future when am held up. I began getting in constant conflict with my boss since I was not able to accomplish my daily task due to the extra work that my workmates offloaded to me. Since I was still new in the organization, I did not want to get into conflict with anyone, hence, the reason I would accept work from other people without objection. That notwithstanding, if I tried to report that matter to my boss I would create a misunderstanding with the concerned individuals, thus, resulting in workplace conflicts that are not ideal for my stay in the new job. Technically, I was in a dilemma but I pretended that things were moving on well by straining so much to accomplish tasks from my boss and the extra ones from my colleagues. Soon the vigor and excitement that I had about the job slowly but surely vanished since I would not long for the next morning given the kind of pressure that I was going to experience at the office. Ideally, as days went by I felt more overwhelmed by the job since my arrogant boss continued to introduce new tasks for me which she expected me to complete within the usual deadlines. At some point, I tried to explain to her how overwhelming the job was given the short and strict deadlines that she usually set but she rudely interjected yelling at me saying that if I cannot cope with the job I should find another one that suits me. Typically, that was the turning point in my career since it was evident hat however much that I dedicated my time and energy on the job the boss was still unappreciative of my efforts. Efforts to elaborate what it took to accomplish the tasks allocated but the boss was adamant that the former holder of the post used to work within those timelines. For a moment, it hit me why the position was vacant that necessitated my recruitment. My boss was rude, arrogant, ruthless and inhumane in all measures since all she cared about was ensuring all the orders she gave are instituted despite how unrealistic or impractical they sounded. The job satisfaction that I previously had vanished and I felt like a slave in that job. Ideally, I did not wish to see the boss eye-on-eye leave alone hearing her loud yells whenever she wanted something done. She made me hate my work, my job place as well as the colleagues that I worked with. Everything dealing with the task-evoked negative emotions, and I did not want to be associated with it anymore. After three months of work, I was contemplating drafting a resignation letter but the fact that I seriously needed the paycheck to sustain my living I opted to continue with work coping up with the stress of handling an incompetent boss. The quality of my life significantly diminished since my mind was always preoccupied with things to do with my job. I had no time for my family or friends; I became a loner since I would not interact freely with my colleagues both at work and at home. All that I cared about was how I would ensure met the next job deadline to avoid conflict with my boss. The problem continued to unacceptable levels to the point my boss got personal with the grudge she secretly had with me. Sincerely, I always respected her as my boss by her designation as the head in my department but she seemed to dislike me for reasons best known to her. Despite the open hatred that she would often demonstrate through her deeds I did not attempt to confront her nor did I ever report the matter to the chief executive officer for the apparent reason of maintaining a good rapport with her. The organization had the culture of conducting job evaluation bi-annually, and the employees were entitled to a bonus and pay increase as proposed by their immediate bosses based on their level of hard work and competence. Despite the perfect relationship that existed with my boss I always gave my very best to my job and that was a testament in the manner in which I would be able to beat strict deadlines fixed to frustrate my efforts. My colleagues at the office often applauded my efforts since I would practically do anything at my disposal to ensure the tasks are accomplished and in the required manner. However, in spite of demonstrating hard work and determination in my job, my boss seemed not impressed since she always engaged me in quarrels over petty issues. Since I was in charge of the personnel needs of the organization’s employees I was able to come across details of how the bonuses and salary increment had been awarded. To my amazement, all other employees had been subjected to reasonable salary adjustment but for my case only five dollars had been added to my original salary. That move demoralized my morale for the job to a point that I took a week-long leave to contemplate my next move in the job. It was evident to me that the boss did not like me and at best did not want to see me at the position since she was determined to frustrate my efforts. I was significantly depressed since I had forsaken everything else and committed all my energy and time to the job but still I was not getting positive results. After a session of meditation and personal reflection, I decided to quit the job and look for another one. I understood the fact that my decision was prone to uncertainty because it would take me a considerable period to secure another job or fail to get another job altogether, but I was determined to quit my current job. I talked to myself and made the decision that that is not the kind of experience I want to get from any other job in future. Ideally, a job should be something that I enjoy doing and not merely a form of slavery that I perform active duties to ungrateful individuals. The day that I took a seven-day leave served to be my last day in that organization since I never reported back on this day. The experience that I had for the short period I worked with that group made me hate the company, the bosses as well as the employees since it adversely affected my life in a manner that is irreversible. I wasted my time at the organization since I would have progressed in my career ladder if I was in a different group. However, despite the fact that I had an awful work experience with the organization, I was able to learn vital lessons that have assisted me to advance my career path in the right manner. Read More
