"The Drowned Cities"

In their mission to get food, they meet Tool who captures them and forces Mouse to go and look for medicine as he hold Mouse hostage, threatening to harm them if Mahlia fails to bring medicines as requested . On returning to her home, Mahlia realizes that (UPF) United Patriot Front has come to the village to look for Tool. She arranges a violent escape for Dr. Mahfouz and herself. After the soldiers had returned to Tool, Mahlia betrays Dr. Mahfouz in an effort to lead the UPF to a haven that was in the North. Due to Malia’s action, her village was burnt down, and her neighbor enslaved as the doctor got killed by the United Patriot Front. Tool gets recruited by the UPF as Mouse is separated from Mahlia. The remaining story is based on the rescue attempt of Mouse (Bacigalupi, 2013).
