My Big Fat Greek Wedding Introduction Following the ethics of the comedy and the stage play from the character Nia Vardalos who stares and also is the author of the screenplay; the play actually creates a large and also loud scene of the game that is also ethnically based type of movie. The movie obsessively follows the tradition of the world. My Big Fat Greek Wedding features Vardalos plays Toula Portokalos, who doubts something quietly. He is in his late thirties of age but still aims at conquering the lady who serves as a waiter to her father in Chicago. In initially, she failed to meet the cultural requirements of getting married to a male Greek. However, she does her role of taking care of male Greek babies which she usually feeds since her duty is a waiter. As time goes by, her family is in worries of whether of she may find a man in a life or remain single throughout her lifetime. Her father even reminds her in the play to get married since she is becoming old with time. It is because most men do not like to marry old ladies since they do not easily give birth at their old age (Fields and James, 2005). Toula intends to go to college so that she can improve in her knowledge in computer and operations. However, she falls for a handsome man who is not from Greek by the name Ian Miller. The man is a teacher in a given high school and also a vegetarian. She differs with her family in this situation since in this case she goes against the Greek traditions of marrying a person outside the Greek community. She claims that her soul objective of marrying the high school teacher is simply because she gives he gives her the total happiness she deserves in love. In fact it was outside the expectations of her parents from her on getting married to a non-Greek. Therefore, in this situation, her father, Gus, rejects her new found lover since she went against the norms of the society. The father is so furious in the play that he finally utters such statements. He later takes a soft stand upon uttering the tough statements to her lovely daughter whom she is unhappy with in getting married to a person outside the Greek community. The soft position taken by Gus, the father to Toula on her decision to marry Ian who is a non Greek makes Toula a happy lady indeed. After realizing that the soft stand he takes on Toula in marrying Ian, Gus follows Toula’s mother and accepts Ian embracing him as his in-law son. However, the tough moments that waits Ian ahead is whether the Toula’s community will also take their marriage just as the father agreed to it. Ian Miller has to be ready to meet the Portokalos clan who are wild and also wooly in their nature. The clan is where Toula hails from in the Greek community. Ian must meet all the twelve members of the clan with plastic slip covers and lawn ornaments. Toula’s aunt is an ever a nagging woman among the clan members, therefore, Ian must come up with the appropriate convincing power that make her get convinced that her own twin originates from the growth of her neck (Ebert, 2011). Positive Elements The Greek community deserves and is ready to preserve their culture. They don’t allow intermarriage between them and other communities. The love they are ancestry since it is rich in its background. The generation is proud of their ancestry since they feel so much to be part of it. Despite Toula going against the community of marrying an outsider, she still loves them. She wants all of them to be part of her and also is eager to learn more about the societies’ traditions. The parents of Toula and Ian are both interested in their children’s marriage however, how much it takes in going against each of the family’s traditions. The two families just wish for the best and comfort of their children. Toula realizes that in future those things look better in their marriage with time. She reiterates that she won’t involve herself in repeating the same mistakes she did before so as to strengthen her marital affairs with her love, Ian. In this case, Toula builds her confidence in proceeding to love Ian despite being an outsider from their community. Ian also is proud of Toula’s beauty that she sees no one who can compare with her beauty from the available ladies around. Ian never gets tired with his bid to have Toula as his love. However, does not embrace her daughter’s new found love. She aggressively resists the affair. The frustrations that Toula meets in her bid to marry Ian makes her to finally elope with Ian at the end. However, Ian her lover, is not for the elopement since he fears that Toula’s parents will not be happy the action. Another character in the play, Nick has some determination to make something of him. He advises his sister not to let her get dictated by the past since it is the history that counts in most situations and also brings the necessary positive change (Farrell, 2007). Spiritual Content The communities where Ian Miller hails from are not religious while that of Touala, who are the Greek are orthodox. However, majority of the evidence show that they majorly rely on their traditional beliefs rather than the Christian belief. The Greek Community practices a lot of superstition. A weird cases, for example is seen in the case where the women spit on people especially at a time where the bride walks down to the aisles for the best of luck and also to prevent the appearance of the devil in the bride and the bridegroom’s life. Ian accepts to get baptized in the church which he intends to win the hearts of the Toula’s family that he practices the Christianity doctrines of worship yet he does not. Maria, one of Ian close friends of Ian admits that Ian used to teach in a Sunday school as way of supporting him in following the Christian doctrines of worship in his lifetime. Ian and Toula are wedding despite being formal in nature takes more of the Greek culture of the Toulas than the culture of the Ian (Ebert, 2011). Sexual Content Nikki and other girls in the play are in low cut dresses. Toula and Ian do kissing often in public and also in many occasions during the play. At the time Ian invites Toula to his apartment; Toula goes and jumps on Ian. At some time later, they appear dressed half in bed with sex motive in place Maria also engages with her daughter, Toula, briefly on sex related issues before the actual wedding day (Ebert, 2011). The violence in the movie is critical as it helps bring the subject matter of the movie to the audience. It is important as it defines the different characters in the film. The subject material at time is disturbing to the children and there is need for parental guidance in regard to the violence in the movie. However, the main purpose of the violence is achieved and intriguingly makes the movie what it is in regard to the script and uniqueness. Boredom is not evident in the violent scenes as the audience remains alert and try to recall the main course of the violence Crude or Profane Language Apart from the early flurry of crudities by the unrefined Nikki, there exists less than profanities. Nick and Angelo both enjoy each other while Ian is sad of himself. Ian tries to impress the lots through by bragging about him and his manpower ability too. (Rubin, 2008). Drug and Alcohol Content There is some usage of alcohol in the play. The grandmother takes beer while other people drink wine or champagne during dinners and the wedding day. The above is evident when people meet in Portokalos home there is a marry atmosphere as they drink and chat. The many instances in the movie that there is drinking of Ouzo clearly pottery as a culture that fancies drinking. The Greek culture being the setting of the movie is portrayed as a fully matured culture in terms of merry making instances. Ouzo is readily available in celebration accompanied with jokes and loughs. Parents as well as the young intermingle and drink together freely. Reflection The understanding of an intelligent character and also his or her viability may not be easy as such unless on a Memorial or Labor Day times. It is from this environment that she finally meets her love, Ian, who she agrees to marry at all costs. Ian Miller wants to meet the Portokalos clan who are wild and also wooly in their nature.
