Letter to the Editor Daily News “Dear Editor” For quite a while, a very distressing habit seems to havebroken out among the fellows in the locality, this habit of theirs is identified as graffiti. It seems that along with the public places, private buildings are not anymore protected from marking, etching and painting. Recently it has spread out from cities to small vicinity and districts becoming a tenacious problem. This problem is not only appalling but very costly too, because residents have to pay highly for cleanup of pictures to re-painting of the walls.
Similarly, some other issues cultivating from graffiti are that the value of the property declines and retail sales decreases as persistent cleanups and re-painting ruin the structure and erodes material from the walls, beside, graffiti triggers the impression of menace and reinforce the trepidation of gang ventures. Furthermore, this activity grant to lost earnings linked with minimized ridership. These obstacles were directly associated with graffiti, the indirect hurdles that arises as a result of this activity includes shoplifting for graffiti materials; here the acquisition of product is on the expense of the shop owner, secondly graffiti done by gangs are parallel to speaking volumes about their activities and intention and creates fear among the settlers in the vicinity, for usually texts such as ‘you’re next’ or ‘I am back’ convey threats.
Likewise, terror is kindled in the people by painting pictures of destruction such as fire flames, broken house, dead bodies and destroyed cars or other vehicles. In order to maintain some peace and harmony in the society, solutions needed to be presented for such activity. As far as my opinion matters, I think that there are few solution that if applied can be productive. For a start, create awareness among the locales and students about the negative impacts of graffiti and how it is related to high cost through and educating them through a campaign.
Furthermore, applying eradication where paintings or marks are removed quickly and efficiently so that the vandals does not repeat the act and get the message that the people care about their society and their irrational act will not be tolerated. Moreover, residents should keep record of occurrence of graffiti and should inform authorities about this activity so that the vandals are caught sooner. Similarly, make shop owners to not sell graffiti materials to students or doubtful people in order to restrain these marking and etching.
Likewise, install bright light, especially in those areas where graffiti is done in rapid succession. However, I will select one of these problems and give a detail account on how to develop that solution. The best solution, so far to me, is educating the people and students on negativity of graffiti. Starting from the initial step, which is that in small town people usually interact with each other on daily basis and tend to express their opinion on the current problems they have heard of, therefore community councils should ask their member to be involved in those group talks and should highlight this problem in detail.
Once, when almost everyone is aware about this problem, even those who haven’t experienced it yet, the council should arrange for a speech in town for the locales and include people, who have suffered from such activity, to give a detail account of their experience. On the other hand, high school students should also be targeted by holding conferences in their school and pursuing head teachers to introduce a ‘No Graffiti’ day where a particular wall should be built to carry messages by students on how they contributed to stop this problem.
Furthermore, the council should hold carnival or fair in which short documentaries can be screened to convey the message in an engaging way. Apart from these tactics, school should also make the students perform removal of paintings from wall in a community service, to make them realize the effort people go through cleaning up the wall, which will abstain them from doing it in future if they are involved in such activity. Not only this, but to actually be effective, the community can make residents or students responsible for watching out discreetly and informing council about the people who are engaged in this activity and should be rewarded in form of cash prize or gift, for carrying out their responsibility.
To conclude, I must say that carrying out the proposed solution about spreading awareness will be more effective than the rest of the solution, because it does not only involve one segment/group of the vicinity, but the whole lot. By this means, no one will be left out of the awareness campaign and in fact activity of the council, if successful, will reach out to the council of different districts or town, which can enable them to create awareness along the same lines.(The change that I brought was selecting one solution among the others and developing it adequately.
Solution that I choose was creating awareness among locales and student. The reason behind this selection was that it offered various points that could be fully expanded to form a proposal. Furthermore, this solution in a way encircle the other proposed solutions as well.)
