Your full March 26, “Iceman” by Huraki Murakami And then, nine months passed through my icy pregnancy. I could feel the coldness in my stomach. My uterus shuddered with cold every now and then, as if it was filled with crushed ice. I gave birth to a baby boy in my own room, with no woman around, and only my husband. He cut the chord with a tool, and there was my little Ice Man. He had his father’s icicle look, and frost would grow on his little fingers every now and then. I knew that was the end of my normal life, and the beginning of my little Icy Man’s life.
My husband loved his son a lot. I love how he looks at me, he would tell me. He did not resemble me. And, that melted my heart away. Frost started to grow over my feelings too. My love for my husband seemed to freeze. I had to make a decision. Spring had arrived during my pregnancy, and now summer was in. Summer would go away in a month.
I had to decide quickly, as a plane was scheduled to come in soon.I had come to know the frozen land quite well in eleven months. I booked the ticket without telling my husband, and when the day came, I bid farewell to my little Icy Man, and with icy tears, I flew away without my husband ever knowing it. I knew he would take care of his son quite well. But I had to leave him there, as I wanted to get my flesh back.
