English Language Mastery English is the most universally acceptable language. Irrespective of the non-native background that I came from, I was required to learn and use English efficiently. The journey to the mastery of English has been impressive; I note a number of aspects that I have been able to acquire as evidenced by the constant development in my writing and reading skills. Engaging with out of class as well as in-class essay writing has contributed immensely to my growth. I do appreciate the input of my teachers as well as my colleagues in supporting me master the language.

It is no doubt that my capacity to communicate in English tremendously improved. The out of class essays helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses in the mastery of English language. When I was writing the two essays, I realized I could use some of the vocabularies that I had learnt in the course of my study. As featured in the essay on Inequality in America, I was able to use clearly and precisely words such as ‘perpetuate’, ‘rudimentary’ and ‘adamant’ among others. Such words, I did not have a slight idea of what they entailed.

The same translates to the essay on The Effectiveness of Education in our Society. In addition, there was a clear mastery of sentence structuring. Initially, my sentences used to be lengthy and I used to receive comments that they were ‘ambiguous’. The use of speech marks has also been widely entrenched in my writings. I used to find it difficult to quote phrases from other sources and whenever I tried, there lacked coherence with the rest of my work. Through the essays, I was also able to perfect the art of writing an essay; this involves the arrangement of work into introduction, body and the conclusion.

In addition, every beginning sentence of every paragraph had to carry a meaning that is explained in the rest of the paragraph. The in-class essay formed the foundation of my writing. These helped shape my skills such that the out of class assignments became easy to approach. There were myriad of challenges that I encountered through these assignments. Firstly, tenses were proving somehow challenging to master for example, I vividly remember using ‘be’ instead of ‘is’ not on one occasion.

However, with the positive mentality that I have towards mastery of English language, I went to the library and worked thoroughly on the tenses. Another challenge was in coherence and flow of thoughts in an essay. I got comments that my work lacked a systematic arrangement. Therefore, as mentioned earlier I made an effort to develop a strategy that could help me organize my thoughts clearly. Though, there has been improvement on my side, I remain positive to learning. In addition, I desire to have a better command of English since I am aware of the benefits of doing so.

In conclusion, there is no dispute that my language skills warrant an applaud. The arrangement of thoughts to ensure there is a smooth flow of thoughts is a landmark improved. This is coupled with the improvement in the use of tenses and the sentence structure. I am very positive and hope to achieve more in the English language.
