The Blue Hotel Written by Sir Stephen Crane - Essay Example

‘The blue hotel’ is a story that was written by Sir Stephen Crane who is an American.  It is a story that was written in the year 1871 and was on its peak to the year 1900. The story clearly explains that every bad deed and sin done is a result of collaboration and unity committed among a group of people. Stephen Crane is a writer who is well known for the better creation of his stories and he lets extra ordinary events occur to the regular characters in the book. He is a writer of fiction creating a good reading material of the scholars. The story is about five men who are very afraid in Nebraska during the period of winter and all the events occur within twenty four hours time. The life at the west is of harshness and being unfair to the young men who have no protection. One must defend himself in order to survive at the west when he gets accused of card cheating where by he defends his own personal identity. The father of the son decides not to protect the son and a Swede decides to take the chance and prove his victory. Both the son and a Swede decide to start the fight and discover who the best in the west is. Their fear gives them the confusion of who the winner is and the five men motivate the son to defeat the Swede. The writer is determined to explain how the five characters come together to give the son courage and support to fight at the west and defend his life. The writer also uses a number of styles and themes to prove that there was unity among the five men. In the book, there is the theme of alienation which is the main key in the book. For the men who alienate, they face consequences in their decisions giving out loneliness and they break the bondage unity. One who alienates remains lonely creating a brick with the other members in the society. This makes the lonely person to experience self destructive behavior and be in a state of paranoia. It gives the five men the advantage to come together and rise up idea on how the Swede was to be terminated. Swede who is a stranger in the city just like the other two visitors, Easterner and Cowboy, but he is the odd one out and he really fears on his life of which it is reflected at the end of the story. Honesty is another theme that is depicted in the story which gives unity to the five people in the story to win. Whenever there is lack of trust there is disunity causing dealings on individuals giving them the insecurity motive. One of the characters in the book by the name ‘thieving card player’ is considered to be generous making the citizens in the city to term him to be acceptable in the city. People like him and they participate and collaborate to call him a straight forward and moral person. This creates a positive impact of the person despite of his bad deeds. This clearly proves that there is unity in the city making the honesty people to be the best and those who become lonely, they are left to struggle with life. There is fear in the story that every character in the story experiences fear more especially in the blue hotel. Fear is a tool that separates a person from the society making the person to be lonely hence creating a disunity. Patrick Scully portrays fear after he fears about the guests not coming to the blue hotel and instead them going to the other hotels. He also fears the words of the Swede because of him offending his guests and in the end he will loose the customers. The fears of Patrick are influenced more when his son fights the Swede. All this was solved by the five men when they came together and decided to solve the problem by motivating Patrick’s son to defeat the Swede. Despite of his son being hurt in the fight, there is unity among the five men who decided to help Patrick’s son. Unity is proved in the book when the writer gives a third description of the blue hotel describing the help to the hotel owner. There is also sympathy for Johnnie and the Swede by the citizens as seen and experienced. The third description is seen in chapter six when the writer explains how a room can be feared because it is a place of fear. He further explains how the owners of the room can change a mood of the house and compares the house with an environment that portrays the mood of the people around it. Whenever there is fear there is no unity hence support and moral encouragement can never be in such a place. It gives the writer the ability to understand the reason of being united and being in a group just like the five characters in the story. Whenever there is fear in such a place of five people, it is solved and unity always solves everything. A dark and pessimistic style is used by Crane that he explains why people have little hope and trust in the story. Without hope one can not have the courage to share thoughts with his or her partner. Sharing thought is one of the sign of unity because it makes the group to achieve victory just like the five characters in the story. Pat Scully chooses the blue color because it is the color that stands out to be the best despite of him being old. He portrays unity and love to the passengers who depart while from travelling on the train. In conclusion, the story is such a wonderful story and it portrays unity by the use of themes like fear and greedy. There is a lot of collaboration in the story that there is a lot of unity and support from both the characters. Even when the new passengers alive in the city, they are welcomed by Pat the father of Johnnie who fights the Swede. The man is a talkative person despite of him being a local man and he loves peace, love and unity. This is seen when he fears that his son will be affected from his fight with the Swede. There is unity depicted in the story when the five characters decide to show unity to each other more so when they decided to help Johnnie.
