- Being a doctor Dr. Javier is first and foremost a humanitarian. He knew of the way that Amabelle lived her life and, being able to move in high circles within society, he most likely heard of the coming massacre, hence his desire to help her survive by coming to work with him.
- His death strained and already fragile relationship in the area because of the different versions of the story floating about. It proved the divided nature of Alegria by proving that the Haitian life is not valued in the Dominican Republic.

When people are forced to immigrate to a foreign land to work, they look for semblances of home as best as they can. It is usually done by surrounding yourself with people from your country in the community. This sense of being orphaned means that they come to unite with people from their country whether they like the person or not. Ultimately, it is the need to be with others from their country and the knowledge that together, they might survive the massacre that united them in the end.
