Crossing Delancey Happiness is pursued by almost everyone who has ambition, but unfortunately not many can achieve this feeling or emotion as they wish. Often a person’s lifestyle or their loved ones affect their decisions when it comes to marriage or meeting someone special, but most people seek love because they have the desire to be happy. Crossing Delancey is a romantic movie that narrates the story of a young modern and independent woman who finds happiness with a man who sells pickles. The film, which is based on a famous play that took place in New York in the 1980s, is about a beautiful and smart Jewish woman. Crossing Delancey presents traditional Jewish values in an enjoyable and humorous manner and confirms the traditional principles of marriage and relationships. The plot of the film underlines some key aspects, such as love and concern, and evolves around the relationship between Isabelle “Izzie” and her grandmother Bubbie, who wants her granddaughter to marry a nice Jewish man and start a traditional family. The movie, directed by Joan Micklin Silver, includes many great actors, such Amy Irving as Izzie, Peter Riegert as Sam, and Reizl Bozyk as Bubbie. However, Crossing Delancey is a great romantic movie because of how the story progresses, character development, and the acting skills on show. To start with, the plot begins with a young intelligent Jewish woman who values her independence and has a good job. She meets regularly with successful writers, poets, and novelists; she also she has a good number of friends and lives in a nice apartment. Isabelle often visits her grandmother Bubbie, who wants her granddaughter to marry a nice Jewish man and start her own family. Because of this, Bubbie asks for help from Hannah Mandelbaum, a marriage maker, to find Izzie the perfect match. Meanwhile, Isabelle has feelings for Anton Maes, a foreign writer, and wants to be with him; however, Sam the pickle salesman appears in her life when the matchmaker introduces him to Isabelle and her grandmother. Despite this, Izzie is not interested in going out with him due to the busyness of her job, not to mention her desire to be with Anton Maes. As the plot progresses, Bubbie keeps forcing Isabelle to meet new men, as she wants to see her granddaughter get married and to not to be alone anymore. She told Isabelle that “it does not matter how much money you make because if you are alone then you are sick.” She also told her that she would be “alone in a room like a dog.” Izzie asked Sam out to make up for her lack of interest but instead introduced her friend to him; it was at that moment that she realized how charming and nice Sam was. Furthermore, Sam ends up falling in love with Izzie and goes out of his way to change her mind. It began when he told her a story about a man with hat. He sent her a hat as a birthday gift and then he asked her out for dinner. Isabelle wanted to go out with him, but she met Anton Maes and went to his place to review a new book he was writing. She realized that she had made a mistake and instead ran to meet Sam, who waited up for her all night. Secondly, Isabelle is a happy, intelligent, and beautiful woman who leads a single life, works at a bookstore, and has a few friends. She is loyal to her job; she loves it because she can meet many people that she admires. Her favorite part of her job is when writers, novelists, and poets gather at the bookstore. Her grandmother Bubbie is the only connection to her past who wants to lead her out of her loneliness. Izzie has a problem finding her perfect mate while caring only about her lifestyle because she spends most of her time trying to fit into the intellectual literary scene. Her male friend Nick only shows up when his girlfriend kicks him out of the house, so every time she lets him sleep at her place because she is a good friend to him. Izzie has changed since she met Sam and would feel happier being with him. Bubbie is a Jewish woman in her 80s and is a lovely and funny person. Also, Bubbie is a traditional woman and is very old fashioned. She cares about her granddaughter Izzie, as she is still in her 30s and single, so she wants her to get married. Bubbie is very wise but also a devious plotting lady. Bubbie want to find a good man for her granddaughter, but she also wants her granddaughter to change her mind and value marriage as much as her lifestyle and job because she is worried about her future. As Izzie is Bubbie’s closest relative, Bubbie pushes her values on Izzie and would like to see her live in a traditional Jewish way. Bubbie does not agree with the values and morals that Izzie has. Bubbie believes that Izzie should be married because she is thirty years of age and is almost past her “prime” years. Bubbie goes so far as consulting with a marriage broker, Hannah, to help her find Izzie a suitable husband. Although Hannah is the marriage broker, Bubbie is the true matchmaker. She tries to find Izziey a rich Jewish man even though that type of man is of no interest to Izzie. Bubbie’s character is of a creative non-victim; we can see this when she takes self-defense classes. Sam and Bubbie have the same traditional values regarding sex, romance, and marriage. Sam believes that matching marriages together is the right way to meet your other half. In his religion, romance can only come after meeting each other’s families; marriage even comes before sex. Sam’s moral compass is to take care of his family first and dedicate his life to his job. Sam believes that love and romance are necessary in his life and he wants to be married by the time he is thirty years old. Sam liked Izzie for a long time before they met, but because he is a religious man and very old fashioned, he didn’t even attempt to talk with her. Instead of doing that, he went to a woman who specializes in matching marriages. Sam believes that marriage is the only way to be truly in love. When Sam met Izzie at Bubbie’s house, he felt that Izzie was not interesting in meeting him. He told her a story about a man wearing a hat. Sam struggled a lot with Izzie because she did not have the same values that Sam has. Bubbie liked Sam and she wanted Izzie to marry him; however, Izzie wants a man who has a modern life. On the other hand, Sam is man who believes in a committed relationship. Finally, Crossing Delancey is considered a romantic movie at first but it is deeper than that because it searches for the true meaning and value of life.
