The cask of amontillado is a tale of two friends Montresor and Fortunato. The story explores the various aspects of human life i.e. friendship, revenge and betrayal etc. in this story Montresor seeks revenge in blood from his friend Fortunato for a personal insult that he had ventured on Montresor.
When evil is put in disguise, one is able to optimize on one’s evilness and the sense of achievement is enhanced. Montresor might not have been as prudent in his plotting against Fortnato had he been straight forward in his approach and transparent in his intentions.
The story can be said to have a confessional character as the denouement reveals that it has been fifty years since Montresor has murdered Fortunato but has never been discovered. The killing of Fortunato however moves beyond the realm of ordinary murder and acquires the complex connotations of sacrifice and retribution.
