Lindsey Helgemo Mrs. Francis WRI 101 12 March Technology Center: Why is it useful for The Technology Center (STC) at Oakland University was established and available for students on August 31, 2005 and is intended to help students to succeed in their studies. It is conveniently located in the Oakland Center- OC (13) down stairs near the bookstore. STC hours are M-TH 9am-9pm, F 9am-5pm. Having a place open like STC helps students tremendously in getting their school works done. The STC has plenty of computers, free printing and equipment to rent such as cameras, video cameras, computers, and iPods.

There’s one-on-one, or walk-in mentoring on: the use of hardware, software applications, multimedia, databases, presentations, and other digital technologies (Available Equipment-STC). It’s important to have the right stuff for the right kind of job and that is what the STC helps students get the job done.If you require a certain type of software for work and not sure how to use it, STC has mentors that will help you learn how to use the software and train you also one on one on just about any software available (Technology Mentoring-STC).

This is very helpful because not everyone knows a lot about certain software especially those who are freshmen in college. You have certain formats to use for classes and some we may never even heard about it. And this is where STC comes in handy. They teach us about the software in addition to making it available for us. This is very helpful because this saves the students thousands of dollars (Technology Mentoring - STC). STC made it also very convenient because mentors make themselves available for students, walk-ins or by appointments.

And if you have a busy schedule they can work around you. You wonder just how helpful a place like the STC can be helpful for a student. There is free printing and many computers to use just about any time you need to work. The STC now provides 40 Dell computers and 8 Apple computers for student use. In addition, the center offers training on 13 software packages and loans out digital cameras, HD camcorders and laptops to students free of charge (Available Equipment-STC). A freshman named Corby who frequents the library commented “ I took a tour and found STC very available for me.

I use this place 2-3 times a week. Things that benefit me are the free printing and software” (Wozniak). A survey was conducted for students to see how it was helpful the STC is. Freshmen seemed to find them more useful compared to any other students who are in the higher year levels. All students that were asked by the survey “What do you like about the Student Technology Center?” The respondents replied that they could walk in and there would always be computers available for us. Some students like the atmosphere, others use the free printing and it’s fast and easy.

With all the resources available at Student Technology Center is a great place to work.I validated this with my personal observation at the Student Technology Center where I saw for myself how convenient and atmosphere was. Computers are readily available if a student intends to work. The atmosphere was indeed relaxing and very conducive to study. There were also are some couches if you want to bring your own laptop or to reading. Students can come and go as they pleased. If you wanted to rent an equipment the Student Technology Center, all you had to do if you will provide them your Grizzly ID number and name.

They had to check to see if what you wanted was available because sometimes there are also people wanting to loan that piece of equipment. If the availability is confirmed, all a student has to do is just to sign up for that slot and come back when it would be available for use. The number of devices available at STC is intended to promote and instruct technology literacy (Home-STC). The services include borrowing of equipment, use of labs and technology mentoring and is intended to cater to Knowing students can go to a place such as Student Technology Center is beneficial because it allows student get their school works done on time at a minimal cost.

Having a place where assignments get done and printed at cost or learn about any software needed for a certain subject is readily available at STC and this removes the stress from students so that they can concentrate on getting their school works done. Indeed STC is a huge help for us students.Works Cited Wozniak, Corby.
