Summary and Response to "How to Raise a Global Kid" by Lisa Miller Summary: This article by Lisa Miller shows just how far some American parents go to provide opportunities for their kids. Learning a foreign language and living in another culture provides many tangible benefits, yet there are also many more advantages to be gained that cannot be defined. The reason why Jim Rogers moved to Singapore is because he understands that for Americans to thrive in a global world they need to have skills that will open doors for them.
Happy Rogers is a classic case of a young girl who is adept in two cultures, which will prove useful for her later on. Staying in America would restrict her growing capabilities because she would not have to go outside of her comfort zone. The biggest advantage from growing up in a different culture is that it helps kids to learn to fend for themselves in a modernized world.Response:I thought that the arguments that Miller made are valid. It is true that the balance of power is shifting away from America.
For the United States to remain relevant in a modern world, it needs to work with other countries that are prospering. The 21st century has been termed the century of Asia, and I agree with this statement. Raising kids in an Asian country, while still being American citizens, will open up doors for them for the rest of their lives. Although learning a foreign language can be good, the greater skill learned from experiencing another culture is to react to new challenges.
