Running Head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL Proposal: Empirical study about the causes and social and health related impact of smoking habits of Individual Research Title “Empirical study about the causes and social and health related impact of smoking habits of Individual” Introduction and background Smoking is one of the most dangerous habits undertaken by individual that directly and negatively affects the health, wealth and social status of that person. Despite having knowledge of the ill effects of cigarette and tobacco smoking, it becomes quite hard for the chain smokers to quit the habits of chain smoking as the mind of the individual becomes quite habitual for smoking (Weiten, Dunn, & Hammer, 2011). It is generally observed that in starting the social status and prestige is the major reason behind the starting of smoking but later it becomes prominent habit of the individual (Burnham, 1993). In context to this, the research paper will direct to reveal some of general causes and social and health related impact of smoking habit of Individuals. The research paper empirically focuses upon the disposition and mind set of chain smokers that prompted them to smoke frequently. Along with this, the research work will also reveal some critical direct and indirect impact of smoking on the health, financial status and social prestige of the individual. Aims and objectives The primary aim of this research work is to reflect the attitude and mind set of chain smokers regarding habit of smoking so that primary causes behind the starting of smoking habit can be traced. In order to achieve this primary aim, there are several objectives of the research work, which will be achieved with the help of findings of the research paper. To analysis existing state of art of smoking habits among people within society To reflect the knowledge and understanding of chain smokers regarding ill effects of smoking over health To explore the factors that induces chain smokers to smoke frequently despite having adequate knowledge regarding side effects of habits of chain smoking To articulate some of the crucial recommendation for addressing ill habit of smoking on the basis of the entire findings of the research work Inductive literature review In order to collect some relevant and effective theoretical and conceptual data regarding research context literature review method of secondary data collection is taken into account. Different books, journal articles, and online articles have been studied for the purpose of exploring some crucial information regarding smoking and its causes as well as impacts. In this context, Spring, (2008) has revealed that in most of the cases, smoking is starting by a person just for fun and building image in his friend circle. However, after a period of time, the smoking habit captures the mind of the individual. In such conditions, it becomes a mental compulsion of individual to smoke. Moreover, the situation becomes worse in the condition when it becomes physical compulsion of the individual to smoke. In other words, after a period of chain smoking, the body of human being becomes so habitual that it starts to reflect various side effects in the absence of smoking (Spring, 2008). Keyishan, (2003) has also highlighted that changing life style of people, impact of superficial demonstration of smoking in films and television, and lack of proper information and awareness in the people are some of the basic reasons behind the habit of smoking. Smoking of tobacco provides temporary energy to the mind of smoker. Owing to this reason, at the time of stressful conditions, cigarette smoking is considered as one of the major measures of averting stressful conditions by the individual. This becomes the starting point of the habit of smoking (Keyishan, 2003). Russell, (2012) has illustrated that along with financial and social problems, health related problems are some of the major outcomes of the habit of smoking. The nicotine mix smoke inhaled by the smoker directly affects lungs and its functioning. More along with smoker, the smoking is equally harmful for the person who comes in the contact of the smoker. The side effects of smoking can be equally seen in both active and passive smokers. For the purpose of addressing such critical problem faced by society, there is a need of high degree of will power of the smoker and spreading awareness regarding health, wealth and social side-effects of the cigarette smoking (Russell, 2012). In this way, the research paper will direct to reveal some crucial secondary and descriptive type of data regarding research context. Inductive research methodology In order to explore the research objectives and achieving the primary aim of the research work, mixed research methodology will be taken into account. In this mixed methodology, both quantitative and qualitative research approach will be undertaken. In this regard, two prime methods of data collection, namely secondary data collection method, and primary data collection method will be taken into consideration. In the research work, the secondary data will be collected with the help of literature review method. In this method, different crucial literatures such as, books, journal article, previous research papers and online articles will be taken into account for the purpose of reviewing and retrieving information (Fink, 2005). In addition to this primary data related with the research work will be collected with the help of survey through questionnaire methods. In this method, an intensive field survey will be conducted with 50 randomly selected smokers. In the survey, questionnaires will be distributed among participants, and on the basis of responses provided by them, their attitude and perception regarding smoking and its effects will be analyzed (Phillips, and Stawarski, 2008). Data analysis methods In the research, two types of data will be retrieved i.e. qualitative data from literature review method and quantitative data form survey through questionnaire. Owing to this reason two types of data analysis technique will used. (i) Text analysis method: in this method a descriptive method will be used for analyzing qualitative secondary information retrieved with the help of literature review method. (ii) Graphical analysis method: the method will be used for analyzing quantitative data retrieved form survey through questionnaire methods (Creswell, 2003). Time plan The total time allotted for the research is 8 weeks. A number of research activities are needed to be accomplished within allotted time period.
