One of Bill Cosby’s most famous quotes is “in order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” Everyone goes through times where they have a fear of failure, so the fear in itself is not a bad thing. What isn’t good, however, is letting that fear prevent you from achieving all the goals that you set out to achieve. Success requires the willpower to overcome all the obstacles, of which fear of failure is a major one, that stands in your way.

The first time I came to the United States of America, I had true thoughts about why I chose to study abroad and leave my country, my family, my friends, and even my room. During that time, I experienced a fear of failure many times. I was often not sure whether I had made the right decision or not. The first year that I was here, the language year, I studied and worked hard without thinking about my fears. I attempted to make my desire to succeed more than my fear of failure, and so that’s what I did.

I had expected to be studying the language for a whole year, but after only six months I passed the TOEFL test needed to enroll in Embry-Riddle. After taking some time for reflection, I realize that if I did not make my desire for success greater than my fear of failure, then I never would have made it to ERAU. When Christopher Columbus set out to find India, he was not sure of what he was getting himself into. No one had ever sailed far enough west before to discover new lands.
