Hunger Games: Chapter 19 – 27. Suzanne Collins is awesome! I finished Part III of “The Hunger Games” in one sitting and was absolutely floored by the range of Collins’ imagination. As in the first two parts of the book, there was the irresistible tactic of alternating moments of tenderness with incidents of brutality: Thresh bashes Clove’s skull with a stone and then spares Katniss out of his love for Rue. Collins’ language was astounding in the freshness of its expression: I particularly liked the metaphor in the description of the food in Katniss’s home: it is “so fresh you have to make sure it isn’t going to make a run for it” (Collins, 305).

I loved the strain of humor and wit which ran through the entire book. As for the climax, what a great idea to have Katniss triumph over the Hunger Games with the poisonous berries! I thought one of the cleverest part of the games was giving the mutts the faces of the dead contestants: this increased the horror of that scene. The slow build-up of love between Katniss and Peeta (with Gale as the third part of the triangle) made me root for Peeta. He is such a gentleman, in the finest sense of the word.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, and hope that it is Peeta who will finally be Katniss’s choice. Which makes me confess that I will be going out to buy the next book in the trilogy at the very earliest: I can hardly wait to see what Collins has in store for Katniss, Gale and Peeta.
