English 06 February Context paper English 105 "Among these s the RYVES TOUTH CENTER has been a big hit. Established in 1982, the Ryves Youth Center, also known as Ryves Hall, has proved to be a second home for children of all ages in the Terre Haute locality regardless of race or money".There are many youth centers in the United States which dedicate their life and money for the youth of America. Among them, one of the most notable is the Ryves Youth Center. Since its establishment in 1982, Ryves Youth Center has been a second home and a safe haven for children in the Ryves Neighborhood in Terre Haute.
Ryves Hall has proved to be a second home for children of all ages in the Terre Haute locality, regardless of race or money. They serve children from ages three to seventeen and all their programs are age related, appropriately designed to benefit the children. Ryves Hall has been offering service to any children who walk in. All the activities provided by the institutions are free for the children. Their primary mission is to assist children and families in Terra haute, which is one of the most impoverished areas in the locality.
They serve children who lack educational facilities, unemployment, hunger and poverty. It is the beacon of hope for many young Americans who are deprived of basic necessities in life. Most of the children who attended Ryves can be put under “at- risk youth “as they come from single parent, below poverty line and children who do not have anyone to turn to. “Students from lower socio-economic status are often denied the same luxuries that other students take for granted. These individuals often live in a single parent homes where the mother is the sole financial provider, disciplinarian and caregiver and may face issues such as hunger, live infestations, lack of hot water and inadequate attention” (Miller).
Ryves Hall takes care of these children who lack the normal home upbringing. The children who are under their wings are between three and seventeen. Half of them come from minority population. Their main aim is to give them a second chance in life and to bring them up in the best possible way. Living in a home where basic needs as well as guidance are not available can have a negative impact on the children. Ryes Hall acts as their mentor and guides them to be respectable citizens in the society.
Most of the children in Ryes Hall display problems associated with having to grow up too early due to lack of proper guidance at home. Many of them have experienced substance abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and low self esteem. “While harsh conditions such as these lower a child self esteem, the problem is heightened when coupled with the fact that a majority of these children have no one in their life who truly understands their circumstances” (Miller 4). Approximately 95% of the children who attend Ryves Youth Center are below the poverty line and majority of them lack a permanent home or are homeless.
These children lack the advantage of many children who hail from affluent homes. The primary aim of the Ryes Hall is to serve these children who belong to one of the most impoverished areas of Terre Haute. One of the top priorities for the Ryves Youth Center is ‘Education’ and they believe that it opens door for everything in life, as it is the only solution to come out of poverty. They also provide state of the art library for the children, so that they can come and read books to expand their knowledge.
Ryves Youth Center does everything possible, to provide the children with the latest technology in for with others in schools. They also provide a free computer lab for the students. Apart from these, the institution also has tutors for different subjects. These tutors are mainly volunteers, like the center staff. Ryves Hall has proved to be a second home for children of all ages in the Terre Haute locality regardless of race or money. It is a safe haven for many children in the area. They provide free meals for children, educational support, sporting activities, crisis interventions, and computer education etc to the youth in wants of assistance.
It is a beacon of hope for the children who do not have anyone to turn to. Work CitedMiller, Kristy Ann.
