In this study, the author Gerri Bates analyzes the work of Alice Walker and considers it as an example of the struggles shown by African American women for Civil Rights. Her work not only shows a great passion for writing on chauvinism, sacrifices, inequalities and injustices endured just because of color or cast discriminations. Alice wrote “the color purple” with such an intense effect on the readers that actually engage and lets them feel the hurt or pain of the situation being told or specified in the story.

Gerri Bates suggests that this aspect of Alice’s work appears to be due to the fact that she herself was brought up in an area where there was forceful gender and color discrimination. Alice’s work stresses indirectly or directly upon the significance of women being independent within the male oriented society.
