I called Tracy to arrange for the phone interview before proceeding in looking at the other candidates from other account managers. The call I made to Tracy to speak to his contract developers brought unexpected events. Tracy proposed to me that if I hire two of his candidates for the open positions, he would compensate me with a special monthly referral program. Although I was presented with the opportunity to accept money for hiring two of Tracy’s candidates, I ultimately followed Bay State Corporation’s standard hiring procedures to ensure that we have the strongest employees possible working for our company and do not incur the potential risk of damaging our reputation.

Tracy offered me money to go against company standards and hire his people while he paid me to double the referral commission every month. This was a tempting offer for me since it is difficult to make a lot of money in such a short time. However, as a project manager, I realized that the company's success depended on me and the employees I recruited. I chose to recruit following the Bay State hiring guidelines so that we maintain strong qualified employees. I realized that qualified employees add value to the company because they are aware of their roles and do not need excessive training. It would have been wrong for me to take Tracy’s offer and hire his employees when there is a possibility of others who have the potential to bring productivity to Bay State Construction. Hiring poor-performing employees is costly because the company would have to release them and begin searching for others. This adds more cost to the company in selecting and hiring reducing the productivity of the company while it wastes more resources.

In reality, I realized that hiring through the required standards by Bay States would enable us to get trustworthy and loyal employees as opposed to taking someone without assessing their qualities. The back door method of hiring employees has the potential to bring problems with performance and trustworthiness. I understand that such underqualified employees reduce workplace morale because they do not know how to interact effectively with others. In addition, they can easily make it difficult for the other employees to work efficiently since they do not know their responsibilities well enough. It would be bad for the existing employees to know that the newest employees are not qualified since this may bring tension in our company.

It also became clear to me that recruiting people without following the company hiring procedure is bound to bring damaging consequences in the future. When such allegations are exposed, it is apparent that this would tarnish the reputation of the company. When the reputation is tainted, it would further be difficult to attract clients, and the business would drop or fail. In this respect, it is possible to have a company that many clients feel does not have qualified contractors and therefore, avoid using our services. On the other hand, I realized that the employees hired without prior assessment and proper procedure might, later on, feel that the job is not as they expected. This is because they may be misinformed and unprepared for the nature of work they are required to perform and therefore, their poor performance ultimately destroys the reputation of the company.

I also feel that once the reputation of the company is ruined, it has the potential to affect the performance of all employees. Most employees like to be associated with companies that have good reputations and especially good customer service. This is because it gives them the motivation to know that they are working for an organization that is respected and valued. I realize that the construction industry depends on customer loyalty and employee motivation, and therefore when the reputation is destroyed it would be difficult to recover. In this way, my decision to reject Tracy’s offer is driven by my desire to see our company succeed and thrive within society. I hope that the employees I hired after a thorough recruitment process have the potential to take the company to a higher level.

Conclusion

As the project manager at Bay State Construction II was tasked with the duty of hiring temporary contractors for building an apartment within Boston. I received an offer from one of the Account managers, Tracy from Mitchell Staffing an external recruiting agency to hire two of his candidate in exchange for money. I rejected this offer and decided to follow Bay State Construction's hiring procedures to get qualified staff. This is because qualified employees have the power to bring productivity and increased performance to the company. I also realized that hiring employees without proper procedures has the potential to ruin the reputation of our company.
