Yes it was pointing towards the Generation Y, who lives a tech savvy and a transportation-oriented life. These people usually belong to the under 35 age group. This pattern of lifestyle followed by the youths of America is gradually transforming the patterns of the Transportation system of America. The Generation Y can never be found without an electronic gadget. It could be observed from this trend that the regular commuters like Suzanne Ostrosky prefer to avail the public transit vehicles or opt for car sharing arrangements as they feel that the driving by themselves or availing the flight service would hinder their uninterrupted digital communication. It has been revealed that the maximum number of techno-travelers stay in the prominent metropolitan areas with unrestrained transportation system. There are some hot favorite service providers of the American Gen Y. Those are transit operators, coffee houses, Amtrak, Mega bus, car sharing organizations and Bolt bus. They are preferred for their convenient curbside loading, frequent availability, long distance services, free wireless connections and on-board electrical outlets. A recent survey conducted by the DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute on 250 passengers stated that 92 percent people preferred to use an electronic gadget during a journey. Around 4 out of 10 stated that the accessibility of Wi-Fi within a bus is a significant factor for deciding whether to avail the bus or not. Almost 52% people reported that they plan to surf the net during the journey hours. The survey concluded that facilitating electronic connections within the vehicle is an important factor for attracting the passengers mostly the young ones. The people belonging to the Generation X and those who are the parents of the Gen Y, used to have a perception that it’s their duty to blend up with the public when they are using any public place like the parks, public transportations and the streets. Confining oneself within their own thoughts at the public spheres used to be considered as something very unusual and things like listening to favorite song, watching photos used to be considered as something reserved for the private spaces. The world, society and lifestyle also used to be according to the nature of that generation. But today the scenario has changed. The parents of Gen Y (commonly known as the Baby Boomers) do not feel very comfortable with the advanced technology and the electronic devices which however help the young generation to create a space for them. The Gen Y feels more happy and easy in the virtual world where they find all known faces even when in reality there are strangers surrounding them always inside the buses and trains. Here we would like to quote the words of F.K. Plous, Director of Communications for Corridor Capital in Chicago, where he states “The digital evangelists never promised us a revolution in the perception of public space. What they promised was a revolution in communications” (Schwieterman 2011) which means the technological development didn’t impact the perceptions about the public spaces which existed during the younger days of the Baby Boomers but it has just revolutionized the communication networks and channels ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
