Compared to the audio magnetic tape and the vinyl discs, the compact disc offers a diverse platform for storage of media files and can accommodate both the audio and visual files in a single disk.

The magnetic tapes were specific to the media target, the VHS tapes were the magnetic tapes that replaced the reel tape of the 18th and the 19th century the development of the video home system encouraged the growth of the sales of the tape but the development of the digital video disc ensured a small portable device is developed. The challenge of the new media is the rate of piracy associated with the media.
