During their dance, Trujillo elicited an indecent proposal to Minerva, which she declined by slapping Trujillo in the middle of the crowd, and she then walked out. The next morning, her father sent a letter of apology to Trujillo, but it was not accepted, and her father was imprisoned along with the killings of their relatives. Minerva wanted to take revenge, and in the course she met Lio, played by Mark Anthony, who was studying law. However, Trujillo did not stop pursuing Minerva, and when she decided to study law, Trujillo made her entrance to schools difficult. With this on hand, Minerva created a deal with Trujillo, and in the long run she was able to graduate from law school. Even so, she was not able to get her license and practice. In the wake of her desperation, she was offered by Trujillo to sleep with him, and in return, he will leave her family at peace. However, Minerva declined the offer, and she and her sisters decided to fight alongside the anti-Trujillo group where they were known as the Butterflies. After tiring himself from pursuing Minerva, Trujillo ordered for the death of the Mirabal sisters and covered it as a car accident (Roberts 28; Tunzelmann). The Dominican Republic was once governed by Trujillo, who is an authoritarian dictator during 1930 to 1947. He was able to control and train the police and the army during his regime in order to exercise power over those who resisted his dictatorship. For this reason, many of those who were against Trujillo went underground in order to escape the hunt by Trujillo’s army. This is one of the themes of the movie, the cruelty and the resistance during the time of Trujillo (Bayor 481-482). Furthermore, another theme of both the movie and the book is the resistance of the La Mariposa or the Butterflies, composed of the Mirabal sisters, who went their way in combating the regime of Trujillo. The turning point was when Minerva hastily declined Trujillo, which brought not only the Mirabal sisters, but the whole family as a target by Trujillo. In addition, another coherent theme of the movie and the novel is the Latin America’s revolution during the period. Underground movements against the dictator were presented in the movie. Along with this, the cruel actions towards those who defy the Trujillo were also presented in vivid motions in the film. Many were killed and tortured as they continuously went underground and defied the government (Sirias 74-76). Lastly, gender roles were also exhibited in the story. The ability to empower women against the tyranny of a male leader was depicted in the story. The importance of the role of women in the family and the courage and action a female protagonist needs to have in order to win the battle against suppression is also manifested in the story. Also, the need for men to satisfy their sexual desires towards women was also present. It also showed that men with power will do anything in order to get what they want (Ouellet 62). Nonetheless, in any battle against those in power will somehow end to death, such as in the case of the Butterflies. In the movie, the battle was strongly fought by Minerva and in the book by the three sisters, but they were still silenced by Trujillo. Nonetheless, the ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Through the use of imagery and metaphors, Vindication invites the readers in the world of a woman who is not constrained by the social norms around her but instead pursued her dreams by bypassing the established rules. For me, Mary Wollstonecraft is truly a forerunner of feminism and her story is something that any youth of today should take time to read and appreciate because it will give them a chance to understand the historical situation of both sexes.
