The apprehension in educational tradition is the major theme in “Everyday Use” volume. The story of “Everyday Use” beginning from its origin is evidently apparent of an apprehension between Dee and her family due to her peripheral education. She is primarily living at the period in time not concerned with ties attached to the world. Therefore, focusing on day-by-day usefulness (working about the ground and the residence) being related to the humanity of culture and a more otherworldly kind of helpfulness and worth. The quilt makes an essential component of the whole story and reflects a detailed account of the family history. It becomes a symbol of the African-American family’s heritage and culture. In the story Everyday Use, Alice Walker has used the quilt to narrate the comparison between heritage and culture from the perspective of the African-American community.
In her attempts to be accepted by her sister, Maggie agrees to everything that Dee has to say. Dee takes advantage of this, using every opportunity she has to point out what is wrong in both her sister’s life, comparing Maggie to her own apparently successful life.
Her current work under discussion came into limelight in the year 1973. The story revolves around a lady belonging to the ‘South’ and her two daughters. Based in the arena of the 60s and the 70s the story is an outcome of the emerging ‘Black’ socialist movements hat were all flared up in those years.
The plot and settings of the short narrative is based on the return of Dee, who is thought to be successful due to the education she has received. Her mother’s imaginary hopes are that her daughter will return home a grateful woman, for all her mother has done to ensure that she receives a good education.
The author states that both of these stories focus on key moments that symbolize threats to an established order. Obi, a self- professed proponent of progress, has little sympathy for the traditions of the un-educated masses. Likewise, he is intent on trying to impress his superiors by making quick progress to his new commission.
Mama valued being capable and useful herself. Dee wanted to show off as part of her image as a Black American with status, power and new values. She was somehow materialistic and false. These precious items, in particular the quilts, were a metaphor for the differences in values and cultures between Dee/Wangaro on the one hand and Mama and Maggie on the other.
