PART 2: PRECEDENT RESEARCH SUMMARY (350 words: 10 PTS) CHOSEN CATEGORY: PUBLIC PARKS PROJECT EXAMPLE: Prospect Park – Brooklyn, NY A common feature that is to be found in modern cities is the skyscraper. This is primarily due to their ability to occupy little ground space, a precious commodity, and house so many people at the same time. In other words, it is the perfect housing solution to large populations in small areas like cities where land is a precious commodity. But one of the hallmarks of a great city is its ability to provide a malty purpose recreational center like a park. Several factors that are described in great detail are the main decisions that led to us as a committee of the town of Woodridge to settle anonymously on construction of a public park. One of the main reasons is its ability to offer a myriad of services that meet the day to day demands of a growing town. The down side of it is that it may require a lot of space, but that does not compare to the positive contributions it will make in making the own more functional as well as a means of recreation. A good example of a multipurpose public park is the Prospect Park in Brooklyn, seated on 539acres of land; it is run and operated by the New York City departments of parks and recreation. One of its standout features is the man made waterways and only lake, the Prospect park lake. This can primarily be used for recreation and also for competitive sporting activities. In case of our project we shall harness the two main rivers to dam that would not just be for recreation but also to generate electricity to boost the town’s main grid. Secondly, the park hosts sports facilities including seven basketball fields, tennis courts, and soccer fields among others. It is hard to argue about the growing need for sports facilities for our young men and women and exercising joints for the general public. The park is to contain various sports facilities that would be open to the public every day of the week. It will be divided, in that there will be sections that would be open to everyone and others for competitive activities. The fields will include soccer, baseball, cricket, handball etc. The grand designers also included that the park should have a cemetery by the name Society of Friends cemetery Quacker hill. This in regard to our plans is to be a burial site for war heroes, and men and women of noteworthy contribution o to the federal state and city. Part of it will also be open to the public and will act as a burial site for the general public. Since much of the town’s population and visitors from outside are expected, the park will designate parking areas for those with automobiles and bicycles. Similarly the main roads that pass through the park will be open during peak hours to help decongest the city. In one way or another it will be used to connect the northern side of the town and the western where the park is to be situated. Human interaction is one major area of concern, how the crowds will be managed as they move in and out of the park. How to maintain law and order, one of the main areas of human interaction is to be situated at the heart of the park, where the four roads that divide the park will be intersecting. Security will be maintained by security officers deployed in various shifts. One final area of tremendous interest is the existence of a zoo and nature conservancy at the prospect park in Brooklyn. The park is home to various animals and plants of exotic and indigenous nature like the zebra, lion, bear, but these exist in the caged form as they are deemed dangerous. Others like monkeys, dove, pigeons, and ducks exist in free form and can be fed openly by visitors to the park. All these and many more factors led us to the decision of electing to build a park instead of others that might have been deemed favorable. It is important to note that all areas of the park will be open to the public on the set times. Similarly effective community participation is required to make the project a success. The site is at the moment bare on one part and marshy, swampy on the other part, covering an area of roughly 450 acres. The town is inhabited by peoples of various cultural backgrounds and is a growing metropolis. The stadium will be open to use on official match days while the fields will be open to use 24hours The health facilities are to be open to the public and users of the park just in case of emergency. The food outlets, bar and restaurant are to be used by visitors to the park to access, refreshments and also as a means to meet and interact. The restaurant will be divided into lasses depending on the individual’s purchasing power. The zoo and nature conservancy are to be open to the general public on weekends and national holidays, people of all ages are allowed in after buying a ticket at favorable price. The interaction sites and where people will be allowed to gather is to be open at no cost The lake site will be open to the general public upon purchase of a ticket. Since the Woodridge Memorial park is involved in serving a lot of people, we found the Arup engineering consultancy firm being suitable in completing our project. The Arup engineering consultancy firm is located in London, but has satellites associated companies all over the world. One of the leading factors that led us to choosing this firm as a committee is its global reputation as a leading international firm of unparallel scope and exceptional productive collaborations. Similarly, it has depth and breadth of expertise which include seismic and offshore engineering, and more recently combining the urbanization of our cities with the green belt movement. This was especially important in regard to the construction of a public park in a fast growing metropolis with skyscrapers. Furthermore, its independent ownership nature provides a structure open to everyone’s opinion when it comes to decision making. This makes it easier to meet the needs and wants of the client and commercial as well. In addition, the company is rigid with regards to the design and management of projects and designs. The project has really motivated us in choosing the firm in undertaking our project. In conclusion the Woodridge memorial park is a project that is to be undertaken at the taxpayers’ expense and must therefore take that into consideration. The firm took into consideration such factors and came up with not just a cost effective measure in regards to construction but maintenance as well. It also agreed that during construction employment opportunities would be offered to the locals at a certain percentage, These factors contributed to this well thought decision of appointing the firm as the major project executor in tandem with other local firms. The Osaka Maritime Museum consists of a dramatic offshore dome that gives it an attractive structure. When designing this building, Arup firm gave it a structure that would fit on the largely reclaimed land in Osaka area.
