The direction of rotation and the number of shaft significantly influences the direction of rotation of the output gear. When the number of gear shafts in a compound gear is odd, then both the input and the output gear rotate in the same direction. Alternatively, when the number of the gear shafts is even, then the input and the output gears rotate in opposite directions. In a compound gear system, the output ration of the whole system is as a result of compounding the individual rations of the paired gears in the system.

The ratios of the adjacent gear pair is multiplied to obtain the general ratio of the system (Dudley 2009). Generally, compound gears have more than two pair of gears meshed together thus they rotate together. In a simple compound gear train, the motion of the input is transmitted through the big gear, alongside the counter-shaft to the small gear and finally to the output. As a result, the output turns in the same direction as the input but at a reduced speed than the input, depending on the comparative size of the gears.

A change in the total inertia of a geared system is evident the system accelerates or decelerates. The value of the increase or decrease in the system’s total inertia is determined by the speed ratios of the diverse parts of the system. Moments of inertia in geared shafts can be used to determine the total torque in addition to the equivalent moment of inertia for any given accelerating shaft. Two shafts A and B, geared together with a speed ration of G (nA/nB ), with the total moment of inertia on the shafts given by IA and IB , then the expression for the Torque on shaft A capable of producing an angular acceleration of an angular acceleration of αA is given by: The torque on shaft A is given by IA.

αA, this produces an acceleration of G αA on shaft B. In order to achieve this
