This is the age of technology and the world is progressing rapidly due to advancements in technology. Electrical engineering is involved in almost every technological aspect of life, such as, information technology, healthcare technologies, computer aided technologies, and electrical wiring in buildings. If we talk about advancements in the field of telecommunication, we can say that the role of electrical engineering in this specific field is very considerable. Electrical engineers are continuously putting their efforts to improve communication between people by designing easy to use communication technologies, such as, cell phones and notebooks. Electrical engineering not only facilitates long distance communication but also serves the world in many other areas related to technology. Therefore, we can say that electrical engineering is one of the major fields of engineering which is playing a considerable role in technological progress all over the world. What Do Electrical Engineers Do? In the present world, electrical engineers are putting their efforts in solving electricity shortage problems by identifying and designing new electricity generating systems. “Electrical engineering mainly deals with the generation and distribution of power and maintenance of large power systems” (Dhulipala). Some of the major fields related to renewable energy systems in which electrical engineers have really shown their potential, knowledge, and skills include generation of hydropower energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy. Electrical engineers design new electronics, which they also test for quality and reliability. “The engineer is often responsible for overseeing the installation of the product to ensure it is installed properly and safely” (Partington). Electrical Engineers apply electric design principles to design, manufacture, and test digital or analog devices, systems, and circuits. Electrical engineers design such devices and circuits for a variety of fields, such as, robotics, handheld gaming systems, entertainment, security, manufacturing, health care, airline navigation systems, signal processing, telecommunication, and power and energy. Electrical engineers mainly deal with the production of electricity by designing circuits. “An electrical engineer has many potential job functions but most work on designing products that are powered by or produce electricity” (Partington). “One of the tasks of an electrical engineer would be to develop electrical system products for household uses or for business uses” (Shipway). Electrical engineers design different electricity-based products, which serve people as well as countries. Electric products, such as, televisions, radios, computer systems, mobile phones, laptops, audio and video systems all involve the input of electrical engineers. Let us now get an overview of some of the major technological developments, which could have been impossible without input of the efforts electrical engineers. Electric Cars Electric car is one of the major developments related to the field of electrical engineering. An electric car is a vehicle that makes use of batteries and electric motors instead of gasoline engines. The batteries are rechargeable and control the main parts of the cars. Some of the most considerable features of electric cars include more reliability, convenience, less noise, up to 500 hundred percent more efficiency as compared to internal combustion engines, regenerative breaking system, and no emission production. There is no emission of fuels from electric cars because they do not use gas for any purpose. Compared to the internal combustion engines, electric cars provide up to three times more stored energy to the wheels. It is due to these benefits that today electric cars are becoming more and more popular in almost every country of the world. Renewable Energies The world is really in need of alternate sources of energy to meet industrial and daily requirements of life. It is the role of electrical engineers to design the equipment, technology, and mechanism of renewable energy generation systems. Renewable energy systems designed by the electrical engineers produce a number of benefits, such as, sustainability, less maintenance requirements, environment friendliness, reduced cost of operations, and increased economic benefits. These advantages also make renewable energy sources very critical for the economic stability of a country. Electrical engineers design these energy generating systems in such as way that these systems not only bring economic benefits to a country, but also they put a very minimal impact on the environment because of generation of very little amount of waste products. Qualities of an Electrical Engineer Some of the skills and qualities, which an electrical engineer needs to possess to excel in his/her professional career, include good knowledge of circuits, knowledge of power applications, project management skills, excellent communication skills, knowledge of electronics, problem solving skills, accuracy, adaptability, team management skills, creativity, and safety-consciousness. An electric engineer should know how to work in teams and how to manage subordinates in projects. An electric engineer needs to have a good knowledge of the safety management issues and all kinds of circuit design skills. Moreover, ability to use logic in solving problems and knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, algebra, calculus, and atmospheric dynamics is also very important for an electric engineer. All of these qualities are necessary for an electrical engineer to build a successful professional career. Job Market for Electric Engineers Job market for electrical engineers has never been on low side. Electrical engineers have always been successful in finding good job opportunities not only in their home countries but also in other countries. Electrical engineers also get good salary packages. For example, in the United States of America, the pay scale for an electrical engineer ranges from $75,000 to $85,000 per year. Hanson states, “Electrical engineers who specialize in electronics earned even more, at an average of $88,670”. Courses for an Electrical Engineer An electrical engineer needs to complete a degree in electrical engineering plus some computer courses to become a good engineer. “A degree in electrical engineering can mean landing a work in universities as a professor or perhaps as an innovator in big companies from all around the world” (Shipway). Some of the minors, which an electrical engineer needs to study, include algebra, calculus, geometry, robotics, computer systems, and safety management systems.
