Extract of sample "The Demand for Electrical Engineering"

The Demand for Electrical Engineering Introduction I am currently studying at Montgomery College, with a major in Electrical Engineering. I chose the field of Electrical Engineering mainly because of my fascination and unwavering interest in engineering, particularly in the microelectronics discipline. Major Influences When I was growing up, I always had this “Mr. Fix It” attitude. I would always tag along with my father whenever he fixes something in the house: radios, ceiling fans, car engine, and even toilet drains and kitchen sinks. I grew up admiring my father for his ability to fix anything that is broken. And I must say that he the influential factor and reason why I took up engineering. Aside from my father, the science of Electrical Engineering and its base of interesting and diverse concepts have made me feel wanting to be a part of it and be one with it. I feel that with my eagerness to understand, commit and learn from mistakes, I can be one of the future engineers who will continue to develop its science and practical applications of electrical and electronic devices systems, most especially in the field of microelectronics. The Demand for Electrical Engineering Years before the Information Age and the development of the World Wide Web, the demand for Electrical Engineering professionals ranged from the field of telecommunications, energy, transportation, medicine, and agriculture to name only a few. Nowadays, the field of Electrical Engineering is taken into new heights. The massive progress of the Internet has paved way for the development and production of microprocessors for computers, machines, and computer-related gadgets. The rapid turnover of computers and computer-related products has increased the market demand for such technologies in the next decades to come. Furthermore, the escalating number of hand-held portable computers, cellular phones, global positioning system (GPS) device, and the like has made the demand for engineering graduates increment a ten-fold, thus raising the need for competent professionals who will contribute to this emerging arena. Microelectronics is only one of the numerous sub-disciplines in Electrical Engineering that has promising and wide array of potentials. New researches are taking place in this field and developments are made in the world of microchips. Researchers working at the University of Arizona are discovering methods to create microchips with the help of proteins from “living cells.” Transfer to the University of Maryland Although my current educational institution provides a strong grasp of knowledge in the field of Electrical Engineering, I believe that University of Maryland could provide more than what I have learned and experienced from the years I have spent learning the science of Electrical Engineering. Aside from my interest in microelectronics, I believe the University of Maryland takes its students into new heights, particularly in the field of research and development. From the technical knowledge and fundamentals of Electrical Engineering that are being imbibed and instilled, students like me would be more than prepared to face and succeed in any career move we make, from pursuing graduate school to becoming successful and productive professional engineers. In the micro scale, the University’s program in allowing students to design and perform their own experimental projects, as well as its integrative and innovative approach in research projects would allow students like me, researchers, and professors alike to become more adept in applying technical knowledge in real life scenarios. The University’s nanotechnology program is a giant step for any university in the United States, as well as in other parts of the globe. This recent breakthrough is an accomplishment that has earned the attention of the country. I fervently hope that I could also be a part of this fruitful endeavor, as guided by the faculty and researchers of the University. Learning the technical and practical applications of Electrical Engineering is not enough to equip any individual in facing the playing field. In University of Maryland, students are taught the values of ethics and one’s obligations to society, co-workers, employers, and fellow colleagues. And this, I believe, is a critical aspect in practicing the engineering profession. Students may have learned what they “ought to learn” from classrooms. In the field, however, professionals are generally treated not on what they know but on how they deal with co-workers, clients, and employers. I consider University of Maryland’s emphasis on one’s moral ethical grounding as essential in attaining, not only respect from co-workers, the right path towards success. What sets this University from the other universities I have come to know is that it follows a holistic approach in the growth and development of each and every student in its roster. From knowing the fundamental knowledge to applying this knowledge into concrete and substantial results, the University has not failed to forget that the very core being of knowledge lies on ethics and morality of the person, and not just what is written from books and journals. And wherever knowledge brings man, it should always be for the betterment of mankind and not towards his destruction. Apart from what the University could provide for students, I believe that I could contribute to this University by valuing and abiding the rules and regulations it has set to follow, as well as respecting and honoring its mission, vision, and goals. It only comes once in a lifetime that I would hopefully transfer in a highly reputable University. And as an act of gratitude, I would do everything I can in accomplishing the requirements and academic demands, and not ask for what the University can do for me but what I can do for the University. I may not be the best in our class, but I believe that with my admission in the University of Maryland, I may be able to further prove myself that I could excel in my chosen field of interest. Rest assured that the University would not regret the move it would take on my case while all my effort and hard work in studying engineering would pay off. As the world market continues to search fresh new talents, I can proudly say that hopefully, with the aid of the University of Maryland, new breed of Electrical Engineers will scour brand new ways in developing and enhancing new technologies for the benefit of mankind. Eventually, the University will be in the forefront of the new millennium in devising novel ways and means to improve technology while enhancing society’s way of living. Thank you very much for the attention and considerable time you have given in reading my transfer essay. May this essay be instrumental in bridging our gaps into a one unique common goal. I admit that I am not a great student, but through this admission, I promise to be good abiding student of this institution. I hope you would carefully consider my intentions in transferring to this reputable institution. Read More
