Lamb inquiry 2009 Name: Date: University Affiliation Lamb inquiry 2009 PARENTS EXPERIENCING AN “UNTHINKING UNCARING SYSTEM THAT DOESN’T LISTEN TO THEM OR TAKE THEIR CONCERNS SERIOUSLY” INTRODUCTION An effective academic system which is offering specialized skills to children with disabilities should be one which has dedicated itself fully to be able to develop disabled children who can be of very great use in what they have learned in school as they practically apply it to the field. Well trained staff members cooperating parents and full availability of learning materials will be instrumental in enabling the children to excel academically. However parents who play a major role in the children with disabilities success are faced by several factors which make it difficult for the disabled children to excel as expected these include ; Poor quality of education given to children, poor once a while communication that is unreliable between school and parents. The Parents are being informed at the last minute of child’s poor performance .Difficulty in accessing performance status of the children frequently. The essay tries to highlight some of the problems and the best solutions through which they can be overcome to enable the disabled children excel.(lamb inquiry , 2009) DISCUSSION Poor quality of education given to children The quality of education being offered to our children in schools has been a very sensitive issue. The parents are mainly disadvantaged when it comes to the quality of education given to their kids. Specialized skills need to be impacted to the disabled children to enable them be more competent when out in the market trying to apply the learnt skills. However several challenges do come with the giving of specialized skills to some of the disabled children. These include financial resources, unwillingness of the disabled children, and the teachers to go into a different system from the one they had been used to. (Capita2009) Financial funding has been a major problem since teaching disabled children new specialized skills that are readily applicable out there requires a lot of resources which without funds cannot be attained. This prompts the teachers to ignore the idea of giving special skills training sessions to the kids as there are no facilities. The other issues with financial funding has been the issue of corruption where the funds are released directed to institutions but before they reach however they are to be utilized they come across greedy individuals who end up slashing the money to very small amounts which can’t really sustain specialized skills training in institutions. It’s been no doubt that without the required resources conducting effective specialized skill training becomes a really difficult situation to handle. (Lamb inquiry, 2009) Unwillingness of some of the disabled children is also another nightmare because some are just not willing to be taught the specialized skills which could be of great help after school. Changing the attitude of such student’s really tedious tasks which requires a long process of continuous guidance and counseling for them to accept the change. This in turns makes the whole system more time consuming and expensive process. Such processes make the teachers unwilling to be involved with such cases they thereby would prefer to teach the generalized skills rather than the specialized skills. These factors all come in to have a negative impact to the parents who had desired their kids to be taught these specialized training which they can’t because of some of the factors listed. (Lewis et al 2007). Poor once a while communication that is unreliable between school and parents Parents would wish to have a good, honest type of communication that is very frequent. This helps to easily update the parents on the progress of the child what needs to be done to make the child perform better. The parents are required to be provided with the relevant information they require as it helps to build relationship between the parents and school. Handling of parents as the same partners with equal say on the child’s helps develop a better mutual understanding and a shared responsibility role on the child’s performance. (Capita2009) Parents being informed at the last minute of child’s poor performance Parents have had another major problem where they are not an aware of their child’s dropping performance until it’s beyond rectification phase where no other thing can be done to help the student out. Development of appropriate strategies and models could be very essential in putting the special skills in place. Well identified procured equipment for the efficient learning sessions would be a positive. All the materials should be acquired in good time will provide adequate time for preparation and learning of the disabled children. The teachers will also have enough time to familiarize with the equipment ensure they are all in good condition. (Lewis et al, 2007) Workshop sessions being offered to the teachers also allow them to be refreshed on the new tactics that can be used to effectively teach the specialized skills. Such workshop sessions will enable them be motivated and up to date. The disabled children also will gain a lot from such as they are being given what is currently on the market. This will help the disabled children be more complete and versatile in handling specialized skills related problems in the country. New research work done on passing these skills to the children can only be obtained in such sessions because the teachers are being taught by qualified representatives from research and development areas. (Lamb inquiry, 2009) Involvement of parents in the progress of the child in terms of performance is another important strategy which will be of real help. Once the parent has been notified earlier that the performance of the child is not good he/she can be able to give a solution which can easily work out as he is close to the parent than the teachers. A good relationship between the teachers and parents will provide a better mutual understanding and cooperation that easily allows the student to have a good conducive, cultivated environment. Such an environment can easily help the student to improve on the performance as he is brought up. ( Lewis et al ,2007) Governmental supports in training of tutors who will help impart these specialized skills to the disabled children. This can be achieved by increasing the number of training facilities for such tutors, improving their allowances, will help boost their morale and so their output will be better off as a motivated worker will produce better results. Provision of funds that can facilitate workshop sessions for the tutors a, availability of required tools materials and equipment. This will ensure all the required resources are available hence the disabled children will have a good time to fully learn and gain the skill they want to within the give time. This will help the disabled children to effectively gain from the training with minimum interruption; hence even the poor performing disabled children will have room for improvement. (lamb inquiry , 2009) Curbing anti corruption within the education ministry will really help a lot because a lot of funds are embezzled. If strict measures were put in place to minimize any misplacement of funds meant for training tutors and providing of necessary materials then there is no doubt that the relevant resources to ensure optimum learning conditions for the disabled children are in place. There will be less interruptions o the disabled children learning process hence even the disadvantaged disabled children will also have a good chance of at list gaining some specialized skills. (Capita,2009) It is the duty of the relevant authorities to ensure that the required expertise in terms of labor and material are well catered for in the process. This will ensure that the needy disabled children are well taken care of as well trained personnel will be able to give better training approach and systems to the learner. It will also help avoid incidents where the learner has to go through the whole system just as a formality only for the parent to realize at the end of the day that the condition of his/her child has gone to the worst stage for rectification. To archive such high level of responsibilities the authorities should ensure that the expertise being given the mandate to train the disabled children have got the required qualifications and that they are frequently being updated on the current syllabus changes so that the children too can be able to be up to date In their daily class work routine. (Capita2009) Difficulty in accessing performance status of the children frequently The parents have also been having a difficult time to assess the performance status of their children this had been attributed to several factors such as inadequate information: the parents have not been given required information such as what is the performance trend of the children what is their attitude towards the learning. Poor Corporation which makes it even more difficult for the parent to be able to fully understand what the main problem is. These combination of factors have made the whole process of parents trying to intervene hectic and some of them have been forced to quit their efforts. (Lewis et al, 2007) This can however be solved by creating a mutual understanding between the parents and schools , which will help the parents be able to easily access information of their children progress anytime without having any information denial problems. A good cultivated relationship will also promote work together partnership between the parents and teachers so the parents won’t have any resistance from the teacher’s instead full corporation helping the children become better performance. (Campion, 2009) Parents Loss of faith in sharing of problems with teachers concerning disabled children The other problem to the parents is lack of self security and confidence when dealing with some of the teachers. This provides an automatic communication barrier which at the end of the affects the child. The parent may not want to full share some information concerning their children as they have fear the teachers may go on telling everyone their children problems and as a result some of the teachers out of ignorance may not be able to fully help the disabled children improve the child’s performance. This is so because some problems the child may be undergoing can be from the family background which he/she came from something that could be well handled with proper communication. (Campion, 2009) In order to handle such an issue an open platform should be created providing frequent interaction between the parents’ children and teachers. This will create a mutual understanding between all the parties involved which will enable the parents gain the request trust to be able to share with the teachers issues concerning their children without any insecure feeling in sharing of the information. The parents also do prefer that a law should be put in place where any teacher found sharing anyhow some confidential issue s of a parent be prosecuted and legal action taken against him/her. (Lewis et al, 2007) CONCLUSSION The performance of the children when it comes to obtaining of specialized skills is very much reliant on the parents. Most of the problems discussed above such as Poor quality of education given to children, Poor once a while communication that is unreliable between school and parents, the parents being informed at the last minute of child’s poor performance, Difficulty in accessing performance status of the children frequently. These directly affect the child’s performance. To overcome such cases better strategies can be put in place such as creating a good platform for frequent interaction between the student’s teachers and parents and adequate provision of learning material to the disabled children. This would ensure they have a well conducive cultivated environment from where they will easily flourish academically.
