Rough Draft, ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Annotated Bibliography Genre: Fantasy Farmer, N., & Britton, R. H. (2004). The Sea of Trolls. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers. Grade levels: 6 and above Gender: Authors Origin: Theme: Summary: The book is about a young boy named Jack who together with his sister are abducted by Viking Berserkers. They are taken to and taken to King Ivar’s and this triggers Jack to begin a new quest in the home of the trolls. Special Attributes: It is a brilliant book especially since the story is thrilling and has a good flow. The home of the trolls have some scary creatures and thus qualifies the story to be an excellent fantasy story. In addition, its characters comprise dragons, trolls, bards, and magic and all these are some of the requirements that make a traditional fantasy. Due to the book’s creativity through the adventure, it is suitable even for adults. Use in class: This story can be used to improve the children’s creativity and since the story is captivating and engaging it is suitable for children. The book can also be used to build cultural relativism in children. I would use this book to teach the children how to read independently. Since it has a nice and interesting story, the book can easily capture the children’s minds and interests and as result encourage them to read more. 2. Genre: Poetry Prelutsky, J., & Rand, T. (2004). If not for the cat: Haiku. New York: Green Willow Books. Grade levels: Gender: grades 1-4 (read aloud), 5 and 6. Authors Origin: Theme: Summary: This is a book of poems describing a variety of animals in a riddle format. Special attributes: Written by an experienced poet, the poems are captivating and can therefore engage even the children to reading them. I find the use of riddles an interesting style since it can be used for learning as a game. The levels of language used is commendable especially due to the great use of vocabulary. However, the animals used are not just ordinary animals and therefore it builds a vast knowledge of the entire environment. The poet has used pictures to give clues to the readers and since children love pictures, it is great resource for the children. The book is great and can be read even by adults. Use in Class: Since the poems are in riddle form, they are a suitable resource in developing and improving the children’s level of sharpness and critical thinking. Due to the great vocabulary used, the book is a brilliant resource for developing the children’s language skills and consequently great writing skills. I would read the haiku riddles aloud for the kids and then they would guess the answers. Use of riddles as a way of learning is significantly fruitful as compared to normal reading since it engages all the children in the class and makes learning fun. I would also use the pictures in the book to create a rough idea on the children’s minds of what these uncommon animals like the jelly fish look like. It is a good resource for introducing children to the haiku culture. Genre: Poetry Martin, E., & Gál, L. (1984). Canadian fairy tales. Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre. Grade levels: Gender: Authors Origin: Canadian / Inuit Theme: Inuit/Arctic legends and folktales, death, science Summary: A collection of stories drawn from British, French, and Irish traditions 4. Genre: Traditional literature Jam, T., & Zhang, A. (1997). The fishing summer. Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre Grade levels: Gender: Authors Origin: Canadian / Inuit Theme: Inuit/Arctic legends and folktales, death, science Summary: A boy is a stowaway on his uncles fishing boat and when discovered enjoys a splendid summer. 5. Genre: Poetry Slipperjack, R., Racette, S. F., & Sapergia, B. (2001). Little Voice. Regina: Coteau Books. Grade levels: Grades 6 and up. Gender: Female Authors Origin: Canadian Aboriginal (Inuit or Metis) Theme: Summary: The book is about a young Ojibwa woman who is frequently bullied and later on her father dies in a logging accident. Feeling unwanted by her mother, she visits her grandma where she feels at home and is happy due to her exciting new life. Special tributes: I wasnt big on this one. There was a lack of story and character growth, made worse by writing that was a little suspect. What a joy to read! The story follows “Ray”, a young Ojibwa woman growing up in Ontario from the summer of 1978 to the summer of 1982. Because Ray has green eyes, she is bullied and ostracized in her community. This changes when her grandmother, a midwife, takes her out on the land in her canoe and they portage and camp and find adventures together as Ray learns more about what it means to be a human being. As in all of Ruby’s novels, I felt innocent reading it. She brought me back to the bush, and she reminded me just how rich our traditional people are on the land and with each other. Use in Classroom: 6. Genre: Biography Littlechild, G. (1993). This land is my land. Emeryville, Calif: Childrens Book Press. Grade levels: Gender: Authors Origin: Theme: Summary: The book is based on the experiences of the author while growing up. It seeks to demonstrate and give feel of the Indians of North America’s experiences. In addition the author uses his own experience as a Plains Cree Indian in Canada. Special Attributes: The book has paintings and therefore can easily engage young readers. The choice of the author to use his own story is quite interesting and makes the story easy to relate to. It paints a clear mental picture on the reader’s mind of how things were during this important historical period. Although the book is about history, the author has incorporated use of humor and that I find brilliant. Use in class: I would use the book in a history class to teach the children about the historical past of the American people. It is a good resource for giving and teaching history on the first settlers in America. Since the book has pictures, it can easily capture children’s minds as they peruse through the pictures. The pictures also have a story to tell therefore even for the children who do not yet know how to read well, it can be a great resource. The book also has an inspirational feel and therefore it is suitable for the children in building their persistence and hope even outside class work. 7. Genre: Poetry Hughes, L., & Smith, C. R. (2009). My people. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers/ginee seo Books. Grade levels: 3 and above. Gender: Authors Origin: Theme: Summary: The book contains poems that are accompanied by pictures to enhance and enforce the message. It talks about being an African American. Special Attributes: I found the use of pictures and incorporating them in the poems and yet working perfectly a brilliant and commendable job by the writer. The book reminds the African Americans of why they should be proud of themselves and rekindles a hope for a better future. Therefore, the book can serve as a resource even for higher levels and adults as well. Use in Class: Due to the brilliant use of pictures, the book is favorable for use by children. The children can read and understand the poems on their own with the help of the illustrations from the pictures. I would use the book in teaching about equality and fighting racism. It is important to tune the children at tender and young age to fight racism and promote equality. With the great work done in combining words and pictures to bring a beautiful fit, the book is a good resource for children in teaching them how to combine words with pictures. I would use the book to teach the children how to combine words and pictures to bring a desired theme. With the continued activity and practice, the children would learn the importance of combining pictures with words. Read More
