A leader is supposed to provide give quality leadership for his fellow workers and subordinates. Some people can use ideas to inspire others and this can be a good way for making people respect and love one as a leader. Therefore, the success of any leader is the establishment of good relationship with the subordinate. This is especially important when dealing with an education system where the leader is mainly the principle and the subordinates are the teachers. In many cases, leadership is a tool that is used in an institution to modify behaviour. This is because it helps to determine the goals of the organization as well as objectives expected. This means that the willingness of individuals to follow a person is what makes them a leader. Therefore in any leaning institution, success will mainly depend on the leadership style to be used by the head teacher. Therefore, the main focus of this paper is to find out the most appropriate ways the school leaders can use in order to gain favour from the subordinates. Research Objectives To review leadership styles successful in schools To examine the most effective leadership styles and how they affect the relationship among subordinates in the school. To review and interpret various leadership models adequate enough to run a school Leadership in schools in relation to Social Intelligence It is important to understand the meaning of the different terms used. Leadership is a complex term to explain. This is because in the traditional setup, leadership is used to bring about respect, teamwork and obedience. Leadership can also be defined as an influence that makes people act in a particular manner. On the other hand social intelligence is basically the ability to understand as well as manage people to act wisely in human relations (Goleman, 2006). This is because this is a factor that mainly affects people’s behaviours and interaction. Therefore, in the case of a school administrator and the subordinates, there is a huge relationship between the applicable leadership styles to social intelligence. This is because for a leader to be loved and respected by the subordinate, then one must also be able to understand the people and also interact with them without any difficulties. Results of the research Social intelligence principles There are numerous social intelligence and leadership principals that are applicable in the case of school leaders and their subordinates. Social intelligence is the ability to get along with others and also get them to cooperate with you. These principals are discussed herein. Humanization Social intelligence needs people to recognize humanity in others. This is a crucial aspect in leadership because people are supposed to be aware of what other people are capable. Therefore for a school administrator who needs to be loved by his subordinate, it is important to make sure that he considered other people’s feelings and also shun away from manipulating the subordinates. Therefore, a leader will succeed by acknowledging that other people are real and they deserve to be treated as human. Perspective It is evident that everyone has own perspective on issues happening around them. Therefore, for a leader should have the ability to read others and also understand their thoughts and feelings. This is achievable by considering other people’s perspective especially the subordinates since this is the foundation of social intelligence. Another principal that is very important is our consciousness. A school administrator or any other person in power in a school should be able to solve problems easily. This is attributable to the fact the person should consider past experiences in order to deal with people without problems. Simplifying approaches of dealing with problems is crucial for the leader in resolving any upcoming issues. Friendship Friendship is an important social intelligence principal in leadership. This is because, for subordinates to love a person as a leader, then one should have an important social connection with people. This way; a person is able to attain and maintain strong ties with the people working below them. When a leader is friendly to the subordinate, they do not condemn, criticize or complain on petty issues (Marzano, 2009). The leader will also be able to give sincere and honest answers to his subordinate if there is a problem or in times of appreciation. It is also important that the principal should make the subordinates like him. Therefore, one should become interested in other people’s issues and always smile in their presence. Always refer to people in their name. This will make them know that you notice them and you also appreciate their contribution to the betterment of the school. It is also important to consider the subordinates interests and also make them feel important. Results of relevant research studies It is obvious that leadership and social intelligence are affected by different things. However, it is important to that different style assist in leading people especially foe a principal lading the subordinates. This is because, the leadership styles affect what a leader says, does as well as how he acts. Therefore, by having a close examination of some of the leadership styles, it will reveal the kind of magnitude that it will have on the subordinates and how they will react towards the leader. Some of these leadership styles that are applicable in schools are discussed hereunder. Participative leadership style It is important to note that productivity is closely linked to human relationships. School leaders using this style treat the subordinates with dignity and this will not only motivate them to be more productive, but they will also grow to love the principal. This style is crucial in ensuring that people get the right kind atmosphere to the workplace. It is the belief that participative leadership style contributes to the outcome in the performance of the subordinates. Transformational leadership style This is type of leadership is experienced when the leader portray high levels human understanding or social intelligence. This is because the leader creates an environment where the subordinates are empowered in fulfilling the highest needs. Transformational leaders are usually servants to other people and they strive to guide other by creating and embracing the school vision in order to improve performance. When a principal takes this kind of approach in dealing with the subordinates, then they will love and appreciate the leader. Charismatic leadership This is where the leader appears to have a certain charisma. This is a good leadership style that can be used by a principal that is interested in making the subordinates love him or her. This is because the leader has many subordinates believing in his cause and ways of leadership. Therefore they will tend to love him because he seems to understand and value their ideas. Generally the way the principal works with the subordinates and also sets the stage for social intelligence will determine the kind of school one (Gronn, 2003). Therefore as a person responsible on developing the staff one principal should have knowledge, creativity and skills, that will enable him to set the staff‘s (subordinates) high but attainable standards which will be manageable and achievable easily (Leithwood & Jantzi, 1990.). These are extremely important value for a leader that needs people to like him. The Christian should also be concerned about the long-term development needs portrayed by the teachers. This may be enhanced establishment of a good working relationship with the teachers as well as ensuring that effective communication is available and well utilized. For the school to be successful both parties (principal and each teacher) should that they need mutual partnership in planning and implementing strategies for the effective leadership. By allowing the teachers to participate in such important issue of making ideas, then they will grow to love you as the school principal. Mainly, the principals leadership responsibility as an initiator, manager, and responder, contribute highly to the teachers morale. This is because, it encourages a good relationship between them (Leithwood, 1992). This demonstrates the effectiveness in the relationship between the principle and the subordinates’ thus portraying confidence in them. Therefore, it is imperative for a principal to choose the right leadership style. This will lead to a good relationship between them and consequently lead to portrayal of love to the leader by the subordinate. Impact of the Relational Impact of the challenge for leaders Teachers always would like and look forward to having good leadership, that will assist them leadership that will help them evaluate, examine, develop, change roles as well as purposes (Hargreaves & Fink, 2003). In many cases, principals or school leaders will always give professional assistance to the teacher but they do not receive the message because they do not love the leader. This is one of the principal challenges facing leaders in schools. Another issue that is a huge problem in today’s school leaders is lack of responsibility and accountability in teachers. This is why; in many occasions many principals do not become friends with teachers since they will undermine their authority. A good leader is supposed to delegate responsibilities, and this might be bad for operations in the school environment. It might be hard for the principal to delegate some responsibilities to the staff. This is because; some teachers might not have the right attitude towards the principal, thus no detailed feedback can be offered to either the teachers for proper evaluation. Impact of the challenge for the education industry Generally school leaders always manage to manipulate, threaten, and intimidate teachers. This is a huge challenge in the education system because many people do not get the chance to practice their roles as leaders in making the school a better place for everybody. When a principal uses manipulation, there is a high chance that he or she will not be appreciated by the subordinates (Duignan, 2006). Additionally, threatening and intimidating teachers will also lead to unacceptable attitude by the teacher. Leadership corruption in schools is another principal issue. In some cases, some teachers get information of corruption issues which may affect their relationship with the principal thus teachers get transferred if they feel threatened. This is key factor that is a huge challenge in the education profession. This mainly leads to enmity and despise to the leaders by the subordinates. Mostly, most school leaders do not like being questioned especially by their subordinates. Therefore, in order to deal with the above challenges, it is essential to have the following recommendations. Recommendations Based on the research performed, leaders can be utilized when faced by the challenges mentioned earlier. Some of the strategies are: Creation of cooperation spirit between teachers It is important to create suitable corporation between the school leader and the subordinates. This is important because; when teachers are able to communicate freely, and achieve the goals without a problem. Most teachers will always communicate with each other and in most cases they do not communicate to their leaders. Therefore, by creating suitable environment for the teachers, a principal or school leader is supposed to foster corporation between the teachers in order to gain respect. Flexible ways of dealing with teachers Principal-teacher relationship is an issue that is crucial for the success of any school. Teachers need to be dealt with delicately especially when dealing with their leaders. In some cases, a teacher can feel less appreciated when dealing with the leader according to the way one is approached. The most important thing is to make sure that as a leader one should understand and appreciates the teachers’ opinions (Griffith, 2000). By doing so, one will not only be respected by the teachers, but the school will also be a success which is one of the hardest challenges in leadership. Appreciating what the teachers can do to make the school successful is an important aspect to consider as a leader. This means that one should place the needs of their teachers before their own need in order to achieve the goals and objectives set in the school. Giving teachers their rights The rights of teachers are one of the most important things that a school leader should consider when dealing with teachers. This is because when teachers feel appreciated they tend to like the leader and also become motivated towards their work. The most important thing is to consider that every person is a human being and it is important to understand that as a person one has right regardless of their status (Ajibade, 1997). When a school leader offers the teachers their rights, then he has offered them a better life and this helps them to love and respect him. Conclusion Good leadership will always lead to better motivated teachers. A positive working atmosphere existing between the principal and the teachers is the key factor to being successful. This is because there is a common objective between the teachers and the principal. Therefore, for the teacher to respect and love the principal, then one should use the leadership styles that are discussed above. Additionally, the strategies mentioned above should be implemented. This will help in enhancing good relationships between the principal and the teachers. With the right kind of attitude, the teachers will grow to like and love their leader which will enhance better performance by the teachers. References Ajibade, E. (1997).
