Admission to USC School of Social Work Masters Program ment of Purpose I have the deepest passion and desire to be a social worker because I have a burden to help others in distressful situations. At different parts of my life, I have seen firsthand the darkness that goes on behind closed doors. If I am a social worker I will have the opportunity to put experience, passion, and education into motion and make a difference in the lives of others. I have the three D’s; determination, desire, and dedication to finish my education. I look forward to the day I can have the credentials that only a fine education can bring and unlock the doors to help children and families in need. I have a bold yet refined no nonsense attitude that is discerning to the crafty ways of people that are scheming to cause harm to others. I am mature, mentally stable, creative and critical thinker with the ability to find solutions to difficult situations. I have respect for my elders and everyone around me because I believe that being well disciplined and associating with other people gives me the opportunity to learn from them. I look at education as a continuous process that starts when we are born and ends at death hence the urge for me to keep learning whenever such an opportunity falls way. Mistakes are there for me to learn and whenever I make them, I always come out stronger and better because such life lessons are very important in terms of personal development. Given the fallibility nature of humankind, I believe in dialogue and providing an amicable solution to problems whenever they occur. I believe that this is the way forward and the University of Southern California has the potential to help develop my social skills and turn me into one of the best social workers in the United States of America. Things have not always been easy for me as I also have some deficiencies, for instance I got a grade C in Mathematics. I have always had a hard time in math so I worked hard to pass that class with getting a tutor. Such challenges only make me work harder and socialize with other students in search of knowledge. Group discussions have assisted me so much throughout my schooling as there is nothing as interesting as being able to learn from my class mates. Career wise, I am looking forward to working with the child supportive services because I love associating with children. I am very committed to the ideology that children with emotional disturbances can be well treated in situations where such difficulties are occurring. Through treating the children where the problems occur, the opportunities for the generalization of treatment gains by both the child and its environment are often increased. This is my personal philosophy and I am of the opinion that giving the best type of treatment to these innocent young people gives me a feeling of self satisfaction and the impetus to keep striving at improving my skills whenever I get the opportunity to do so. The University of Southern California provides me with an opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge in Social Work. If given an opportunity to study here I will work really hard in order to achieve my educational objectives. The social work profession is based upon a set of core values and this is why in my short working career, I have strived hard to interact well with others. The socialwork values have been very helpful to me in human service experiences and interactions with others. I understand that as a social worker, I have to be committed to the professional set of core values like dignity for all and respect for worth. These two principles have been very helpful to me because through respecting other people, I get respected in return and this is very vital when it comes to building personal relationships with others. It is only through the existence of mutual respect between the members of staff that a group can be able to work together cohesively. I believe in the clients’ right to confidentiality, self determination and social action that is geared towards the promotion of social justice. These are the basic tenets of good social care because the clients expect the best from us as professionals and I believe that it is my responsibility to provide the best of service to them. I am currently managing a HIV clientele as well as People in shelter plus care housing subsidy program case. The program also manages drug and alcohol issues as well as mental health in a non profit organization called Townspeople. I love working with others and finding a natural strength in communicating to the divers’ population found in the urban areas or the inner cities. I also have a heart in working with the homeless; currently I am almost completing my BA in Human Development.   I am still inexperienced as a social worker but with the agility, and the desire to succeed in the social work profession. The few years I have had in the field as a social worker have provided me with good experience necessary for the development of my career as a social worker. In the organization I currently work for, we have organizational objectives that encourage us to work together as team and understand that we are working for the good of the organization and not personal gains. There are very well stated ways of conflict resolution and channels to air complains whenever there is a feeling of dissatisfaction with anything. I just love the way we interact with our managers and clients and this is why I have chosen to look for an opportunity to sharpen my skills and I believe that the University of South California will provide me with an avenue to turn me into one of the best social workers there can ever be. The USC School of Social Work prepares students to prevent and mitigate severe social problems, which challenge the viability of multifaceted diverse populations. From the outset, one may be tempted to think that working with them is only challenging and difficult. But this is not the case as working with multifaceted diverse populations gives the best test to a social worker. I believe a good social worker should be able to deal with all different kinds of situations and help the patients accordingly. From experience, I realized that working with this group of people makes me more knowledge and informed on issues that affect different types of people. Through gaining such important knowledge, it becomes easier to deal with them and offer them the best service. I understand that The USC School of Social Work is dedicated to providing excellent graduate education for people destined to create social change. I am interested in case management, psychotherapy and counseling. These areas interest me most because as I professional I believe that most of the social problems occur because people are either not informed or just ignorant. Being assigned with the task of informing them on how to behave in the society in order to make the world a better place brings joy to my heart. Stigma against aids patients, truancy and alcoholism are some of the social problems that concern me most. I believe the University of Southern California will equip me with the skills necessary to handle such situations and get maximum results. If given an opportunity to study here, I will work hard to ensure that I get the best out of the university and use my skills to make the world a better place through offering the best service to my clients.
