Various behavior patterns experienced in school are brought about by children. These behaviors depend on the wide-based differences in home values, attitudes and parenting skills. It is therefore important for the school management to work towards maintaining the standards of children’s behavior (Kauchak & Eggen 2008). This should be based on the basic principles of honesty, value, consideration, and responsibility. Acceptable standards of behavior are those which reveal the above principles in every student (Pintrich & De Groot 1990).
The adults around the school environment have an important responsibility to play since they act as role models to these children. They have to show high standards of good behavior in all their dealings with the children and also with one another. It is important for teachers and adults within the school compound to ensure that they maintain proper behavior (Charles & Carl 1986). The teachers and school management should also show students the importance of being valued in a society as an individual or among peers.
This process will motivate students to maintain their discipline for them to receive benefits from the community. School ethos should be promoted by all for instance through being courteous to the students and being honest (Thomas & Loxley 2007). The rules and procedures used to instill discipline to students should be designed in a way that they clearly show children how to practice acceptable behavior. This will be achieved by keeping the rules to a necessary minimum (Charles & Carl 1986).
Rules should also be stated in a positive manner such that they show the students what to do and what not to do. The rules should be stated in a manner that they encourage all to be involved in the development and the required outcome should be clear (Donna 2003).
