Theorists such as Skinner, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bruner have all researched why play is important to learning and development. This study is designed to consider the views of practitioners in evaluating the value of play in the early years, as it evaluates what children learn through play. This study also explores how the play is implemented in the curriculum. As such, the study reviews the laws of learning and theories of learning in relation to playing. Methods of research include the review of case studies, observations of children, questionnaires, and interview with parents and practitioners.

Results show that play forms a vital part of a child’s learning and development particularly in the early years of the child’s life. This study seeks to understand the extent of the influence of play in the learning process during the early years of development. Whether play should form an important part of the curriculum, and what do parents and practitioners have to say about it. If play then is seen to be of great importance in the learning experience of the child, how they should play be incorporated in the school curriculum, whether or not it should completely replace the traditional, classroom-based, style of teaching-learning.

The study of learning processes is so complicated since it involves such complex problems like limits of learning, the role of motives, reward and punishment, the place of understanding and insight, the events of remembering and forgetting, the role of practice and other such like problems. Yet, young children seem to be acquiring bits and pieces of information and process them enabling these children to interact with the people around them such as their parents, pets, and children of the same age.
