Download file to see previous pages Herein, comparisons will be made to highlight the differences in using anatomical models for study versus self-directed (usually textbook) learning. As well, the use of tutors as an advantage in the medical classroom will be discussed.

Some students are hands-on learners. For them, three-dimensional (3D) anatomical models are effective. “Exploratory tools enable users to investigate structures in ways not possible in the real world” (Implementing, para. 3). These 3D models can represent just about any part of the human body. Models are available of small structures, like the head, or of the entire human skeleton. Models of the entire human body can also be purchased. Some of them even have removable parts so that students can take out internal structures like the heart, kidney, lungs, vertebral column, etc. This enables students to gain a better understanding of the body’s anatomy by visualizing the structures, removing them for a clearer picture of color and shape, and then placing them back into the appropriate cavities so that students learn what goes where, and lies next to what. Some of these 3D models also teach students how to perform procedures. A life-sized arm with palpable veins can teach students how to draw blood prior to using another human being. A 3D model of the female and male reproductive and urinary systems allows students to practice the procedure of catheterization, also prior to using a human patient or even a human model. There are some drawbacks to using the 3D models, though. First, every student is not a hands-on learner. Even with the models, some students need lectures and textbooks to fully grasp the concepts. Also, the models can be a bit unrealistic. “Unfortunately, [large plastic models] gives the student a distorted idea of the true size of the structure in question … let alone its unique feel” (Implementing, para. 9).
