Clark, based on these studies, concludes that media does not affect learning under any conditions but it is the content that is crucial. Using the analogy of a truck, Clark projected media as a medium to transfer instruction.

‘Media attributes’, and ‘symbol systems’ popularly known as animations only help in packaging the learning process (Clark, 1983). The reason why the statement was considered revolutionary is that Clark’s statement changed the way instructional media research was carried out. Instructional media research later came to be perceived as a means and not as the end of educational technology. (Jones, 1999) Though Clark does make his point when he says media is just a medium but it cannot be denied that technology has a major impact on learning.

For example, a PowerPoint presentation has better recall value and helps students retain information well. Besides, students are much more tech-savvy and are more interested in various interactive forms of technology (Kimble, 1999). This highlights the need for educational technology, defined through its four perspectives: media, audio-visual, computer systems, instructional systems and design, and vocational training. Forms of media like videos, projectors, and computer software play an important role in improving learning also in understanding the application of technology.

However, there has to be a proper instructional system, and design in place to ensure that the curricular objectives are achieved. On the other, teachers need to undergo vocational training to keep abreast with new technology and also understand the applications before they use it in classrooms. Just as a curriculum is designed keeping in mind the demands of the real world, learning technology is also crucial for a student to function in a technology-driven world. Contrary, to the historical perception of educational technology which was considered to be full of limitations and where teachers could only impart education and not develop it, educational technology today helps not only increase productivity but also aids students with low IQ levels or learning disabilities.

But it must be considered that the successful use of technology is determined by certain factors. A receptive attitude at the school and district level towards technical support is essential to achieve curricular objectives. Besides, societal, legal, and cultural educational issues could hurt educational technology. Poor economic conditions may cause resistance to technology and restrict its use, and racial divide or even legal issues like copyright and plagiarism could be deterring factors.

However, once considered, new technologies will facilitate the creation of flexible environments through adaptable distance learning methods and also serve as an effective tool for disabled learners. Thus, although Clark’s statement played a pivotal role in changing the perception of the role of media in learning, his argument overlooks the fact that with technology entering various fields and also the day-to-day life of people, leaving education untouched would be jeopardizing the future of students.
