From their theories and arguments (Avram) Noam Chomsky, an American linguist and educator, as well as political activist, came up with his own views and theories which rejected, accepted and added depth in the study of language revolutionizing linguistics.
Today, English is known to be the universal language. To be at par with the rest of the world and to be able to compete and join the bandwagon of technology and business, even professionals of different nationalities study language without so much of a difficulty.
The paper consists of discussions on Chomsky’s view on Language Development focusing more on what is called the “universal grammar” comparing it with the theories of Jean Piaget and B.F. Skinner and my views after understanding their theories as well as its relevance in today’s use and study of language.
In the first half of the 20th century, linguists who theorized about the human ability to speak did so from the behaviorist perspective stating that language learning could be explained by a succession of trials, errors, and rewards for success [5]. Children learned their mother tongue by simple imitation, listening to and repeating what adults said [5].
To proceed I will first give several views on Language Development by other famous authorities starting with Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Theory. This theory came as a result of Piaget’s experiments born out of his interest in how children think. He designed various tasks and interview questions to reveal how children of different ages reason about time, nature, numbers, causality, morality, and other concepts [1]. His studies revealed that from infancy to adolescence, children advance through a predictable series of cognitive stages [1].
