Responding effectively to disruptive behavior, part two I believe that the responsibility of dealing with a emotional, psychological, behavioral or physiological welfare does not solely lie with the school’s counselor. Contrarily, the responsibility lies with the interdisciplinary team interacting with the student on a daily basis. As part of the team, a teacher should therefore endeavor to help students displaying disruptive behaviors identify sustainable problem solving skills. At the core of the different problem solving approaches I use, is the intent to equip the students with behavioral skills, which will assist them in mitigating disruptive behaviors.

For this assignment, I choose to focus on self-monitoring as my preferred problem solving technique in relation to responding to disruptive student behavior. Self-monitoring entails a collaborative effort between the student and the educator with the sole intention of identifying disruptive behaviors. Unique to this problem solving approach, is the proactive role of the student in the identification of the disruptive behaviors. Self-monitoring begins by the teacher holding a mini-conference with the student in order to explain to them the self-monitoring procedure.

The mini-conference is informal, as the teacher attempts to make the student feel comfortable, which in turn prevents the student from employing defense mechanisms to compensate for their deficits; for example, aggressiveness or rudeness. When using this approach, the student and I agree during the first mini-conference on whether to use flip cards or sticky notes to record the number of times the disruptive behaviors occur. In addition, we both identify and explain the disruptive behaviors so that all parties are aware of what to record.

At the end of the day, the student and I will tally our records and sit for about five minutes to compare any emerging inconsistencies. We will then agree on a plan that will help the student desist from engaging in the disruptive behaviors.
