Extract of sample "How to Improve the Situation of the Deaf Individual"

The situation with deaf individuals is the same globally in that they all feel alienated in spite of the fact they may have certain environments created for them such as special schools, which mostly concentrate on amplifying their hearing capabilities and speech therapy. These techniques usually fail because these individuals mostly require a solution that they can live with which is sign language. To improve the situation of deaf individual universally, it would be of great importance to consider having them belong to a transnational and translocal community.

These communities provide a dual relationship between the families of the deaf and the overall deaf community. This is because there is a congregation of like-minded individuals. It is also important to consider the creation of congregation opportunities where the deaf would meet to socialize with fellow deaf individuals. These individuals would feel at home while within such congregations (Holcomb, 2012). In addition, participating in straight talks would provide a global solution to the misunderstandings that the deaf goes through due to difficulties when communicating with non-signers.

Moreover, adopting positivity or a can-do attitude would help the deaf in demonstrating their worth in society. Furthermore, the deaf world would improve if they could teach other deaf people about the deaf language and their overall culture. However, there are some obstacles to these solutions that include lack of technology such as hearing aids, financial resource constraints and out signing environments (Holcomb, 2012). In overcoming the obstacles, the international organizations of the deaf world usually unite to promote their well-being.

The solutions that are unique to the American deaf include civil right laws, availability of interceptors, educational opportunities, a high number of deaf academic leaders among others (Holcomb, 2012). Due to such issues, the deaf individual grows up without appropriate experience as well as a lack of opportunities that are geared towards the formation of an appropriate deaf identity. Due to the fact that deaf people behave differently, there are various identities of deaf people.

First, balanced bicultural deaf people are comfortable interacting with both the hearing and fellow deaf peers (Holcomb, 2012). They do not show preference towards either group. Second, deaf dominant bicultural individuals prefer being with deaf people and function well around those who can sign. Third, the hearing dominant bicultural deaf are those that can function well in the deaf community but have limited contact with other deaf individuals. Fourth, the culturally separate deaf is the one that intentionally keeps contacts with the heating as minimal as possible.

Others include the culturally marginal and the culturally isolated who feel at ease within the deaf community and choose to be affiliated with the deaf respectively. There are several stages of cultural awareness that include conformity, dissonance, resistance and immersion, introspection, and the awareness stage (Holcomb, 2012).
