Assessments in schools have become a common prerogative in such a way that teachers use it to grade students by their performance. The students who pass well feel cocky and smart whilst the ones who fail feel stupid and dumb. In most cases, the assessment gets into the head of both the teachers as well as their students.

They focus more on the grading and passage of exams rather than the common objective of assessments, which is to determine the level of knowledge that a student has grasped in class. Assessment loses meaning when competition takes over such assessments rather than the concept of improving their skills and knowledge.Assessment affects my professional work as a kindergarten schoolteacher of English. I always carry out periodic assessment tests to the new children admitted in school to determine their level of knowledge and understanding about basic education.

This enables me to know how much the children already know, thus enable me to prepare well on how to start teaching them appropriately.The provocative question from this article is what the role of assessment in learning is. I think assessment should be for improving the performance of students rather than for grading students.
