Findings…………………………………………….4 4. Conclusion…………………………………………6 5. Recommendation……………………………………6 1.Terms of reference TO my four favourite ladies who are a constant source of inspiration. My mother, Betty. My grandmother, Rose. My sister, Joan and the Love of my life, Edith. Thank you for being my personal angels. To my dad Benjamin who stayed up with me so that I could finish this. 2. Introduction and Procedure Credit Suisse is a leading financial institution in the fields of investments, private banking and asset management globally. It offers individuals a chance to put what they have learnt in class to practice. It gives interns a chance to develop new skills and to polish what was theoretically learnt. One is able to gain work experience and a set of skills that can quickly and easily be transferred to their peers. This would be particularly helpful when searching for employment after completion of studies. The individual also networks with the experienced professionals and has a chance to work with them later on in his career. The internship opportunities also show them their strengths and weaknesses. Once able to identify them he can then decide to focus on where his talents best lie. This, in turn, helps them to gain confidence in their abilities. Before anyone can land the important role of an intern, several factors must be considered. The following research was conducted to show the suitability of an individual for an internship role in a company such as Credit Suisse. The research itself was conducted majorly online. Journals, articles and even the company’s website were heavily used as data extracts. A report by Albert Laurence entitled ‘The Belbin Report’ was also used as it gives in depth analysis to the factors as well. These were in reliance due to the complicated nature of the report and the inability to contact the company in question; Credit Suisse. 3. Findings The aforementioned company has branches all over the world. Gaining an internship position with such a prestigious firm would catapult one to a different platform. He would be streets ahead of his peers in terms of experience and skills gained. Income is also a major possibility given the firm’s strong financial position. His confidence in his abilities would also receive a major boost. The firm’s internship programs are four; analyst, diversity, quantitative and associate programs. In the analyst program, an individual gets offered a chance to work within the financial services industry. Since the Credit Suisse is a global enterprise, one may be assured of interacting within people of diverse and backgrounds. The diversity program makes this happen. Through the quantitative program, interns are able to make maximum use of opportunities that lie within certain areas of fixed income and equities. The final program, the associate program, helps one to relate what he has learned in class and relate it to the practical world by giving them real problems to solve. The internship program usually lasts about ten weeks. The fact that Credit Suisse’s internship program is one of the best in the financial services industry cannot be overstated. The internship offers one chance to be in the thick of things, face real challenges, have real client exposure and have his talents seen and appreciated by all those that are around him. Interns become integrated very quickly in order to achieve the team spirit desired. The company goes on to show its belief in young and upcoming interns by guaranteeing them a permanent spot and a full time job if they demonstrate hard work and a desire to achieve. It seems imperative that a potential intern has a certain skill set in order to handle a company such as Credit Suisse. Intelligence, wit, determination and insatiable appetite to learn just to mention a few. According to the Belabi report, when analyzing the suitability of an intern for his position, different factors should be considered. These factors really refer to the ability and skill of the intern. He should easily fit into the team. He should have the ability to play one or a few of the following roles a) Plant b) Resource Investigator c) Shaper d) Team worker e) Monitor evaluator f) Specialist g) Completer/Finisher The contributions of each of those are different. Whereas the specialist is single-minded and provides knowledge and skills in rare supply, the plant is creative, imaginative and a free-thinker. He generates ideas and solutions to difficult problems. The weaknesses of each are also distinct. The coordinator can be seen as manipulative and tending to offload his work onto others. The team worker is indecisive and avoids confrontation while the shaper is prone to provocation and easily offends others. It seems unlikely that one individual can have all the attributes. The most preferred team roles are those of a team worker and monitor evaluator while on the other completer finisher and specialist seem to be least liked. How one sees himself appears to be very important. Knowing your abilities well should also come in handy during internships. If in possession of the qualities of a diplomat, working with others would bring out your best. If arbitration and facilitation are strong traits, then try your hand at being the conscience of the team ensuring that the team does things that are rewarding. Environment also seems to be a determinant in whether or not you can bring out your best. It is also necessary to get along with your manager in order to do well. One can also try to work with other team members so as to bring out the best in them or produce better results. 5. Conclusion In conclusion, internships are very important. They are invaluable to the individual, and whenever necessary should be attended. They, however, require dedication and hard work if one wants to gain anything from them. It is also important that one carves a niche for himself in order to learn from the internship. 6. Recommendations 1. Individuals should work together to bring out the best in them and others. 2. Interns should identify the best working environment in order to work well 3. An understanding with your seniors is also necessary in order to be a good intern. 4. Proper identification and knowledge of one’s skills and abilities 5. Working with experienced individuals. Reference Albert Laurence Harrison Cail, Belbin Team Role Report Read More
