My Legends “Son, next month we will move to Botou city”, my father told me when I was 8 years old. I followed my father to Botou city in China and changed my school from a small village to a city. I just thought my family moved to a city, because my parents had to make a living, but my father told me it is because of my talent. When I took grade one in primary school for the first month, I did a really good job in Math. My classmates and I just learned how to solve addition and subtraction problems between1 and 10, but I could solve problems between 1 and 100. My father saw that I was a bit smart, so he decided to move me to a better primary school in the city. I stayed in the village’s primary school for one month, so I hardly knew anybody. When I transferred to my new school in the city, all my classmates ignored me because I was a student from a village. As a result, I did not have any friend in my childhood until I took my grade four class. When I took my grade four class, the school decided to shuffle all the students and take new classes for us. I did not know the classmates in my new class, and they did not know that I was a transfer student from a village three years ago, so I was able to make new friends and it was great. I got some regular good friends in grade four and grade five, but I also met some friends who were bad boys in grade six. There were four classes in the grade six and my class was the worst class, which was famous for bad boys and girls in the school. I was a good student, but I hated to study, so I always followed my bad boys to fight and do bad things. I could not become the No.1 boy to lead them because I was a coward. There was one time, thirty bad boys rushed into our school and prepared to fight all the students in my school. The leader of our group decided to kick out these boys and he let me to find some fight tools. We just used sticks that time because we were young. We treated the final war seriously and tried our best to fight to protect our students. After one hour of fighting we finally kicked them out, they ran out of the school, and we ran out to catch them. It was a perfect war which we had not experienced before. What happened to me in sixth grade was just a spot of my bad history the real beginning was in junior high school. After graduating from primary school, I went to the fourth junior high school in the city. This was the best school in my hometown, but it was also famous for bad boys and girls. Most bad students from my city came to this school. There were three grades and I made several new friends who always wanted to play. I usually go with them and we played together every day. In China, we can’t smoke and go to the entertainment places. However, I started to smoke and was able to go to internet clubs with them. Sometimes we fight with other students for any reason, so some students were scared of us and treated us as bad guys, but we were not the worst students. Even though I always did bad things, my grade was a little good. I was good at English and Math, and I always got in the first three ranks. At the same time my parents began to work on their own company, so they hardly had time for me, and I started to behave worse. Actually I thought I would have a party time without my parents’ control over me, but it didn’t take long. One day, I went to the internet club, as usual, not knowing thatmy mother followed me;. she criticized me and pulled me home. As a punishment,my parents made me kneel for three hours to reflect on what I did. Another occasion, my father learned from his friend that I also involved myself in fighting in the streets, so I was again punished for it. My teachers also called my father to school to talk to him about my behavior, even though I always got good grades. My father realized that I have become a bad guy so he decided to transfer me to another school which was known for disciplining the students, just like a prison. That school was in a poor town in another state. The first time I went to that school, I saw that the school’s environment was so terrible. It had only one three-level building for education. All the dormitories were one-level buildings. There were only six hundred students, but it was famous for education. In this school, some bad guys could change to good students who liked to study or who didn’t do bad things, but there still were some students who had no change. The classrooms were over-crowded, having seventy students each and the dormitories were no different. We were thirty in the dormitory which was very simple and dirty, there were no furnitures and the beds were tied up together so it looked like all of us were sleeping in one bed. To make matters worse, the school only had one source of water so we had to line up just to take a shower. The school’s cafeteria could hold all the students, but it was very hot and dirty. It had no seat, so we had to stand while eating and thehe food’s taste was terrible. In China, there was one word to describe it, “The dogs will not eat this food, too.” There was no store for students to buy junk food. In simpler terms, from a student’s point of view, the school was not a good place to study and live. The school rules were terrible, and there were several rules that we couldn’t break. If we broke any rule, the teachers would beat us. I think no American students can stand this school, even Chinese students can’t stand this school. Even if we found it terrible we had to stay there to study. In my grade two, I didn’t know what my study goal was. I was free without parents’ management, and I didn’t care about the school’s management, so I always broke the rules. I chatted with girls and played jokes with them. Sometimes I jumped over schools’ wall and went to internet clubs. Once in the quiet classroom, my brother Tao told me that a boy named Qing hit him without any reason. I got angry, ran to Qing’s seat and pulled him to beat him. He went down because of my heavy hit, and I started to kick him. Tao ran to help me to hit Qing. Our classmates pulled us and we stopped. We were lucky that no teacher discovered this fight. However, that fight was not over. Back in our dormitory, Qing came to find me with three boys who weren’t my classmate, and they ordered other others to go out and were ready to hit me if I didn’t apologize. So I said sorry; but one of my brothers whose dormitory was next to mine called all his classmates, and everyone took a stick. When they got out of our dormitory, the four guys got beat up by more than thirty boys and they apologized for threatening me. Luckily, no one told the teachers because they were scared. After the incident, I became famous having the bad boy image but I still kept my grades on the average. I just did the stuff I want after school and ignoring school rules. When I took my grade three class, I knew what my study goal was. I wanted to get to Wuyi high school because it was the best high school in our state. But only the top forty students of the five hundred will be allowed to enter Wuyi high school. There was a lot of pressure on us, but I thought it was not that important for me, at first. But with how my parents cared for me and looked after my schooling, I decided to study better so I can pass the exam to get to Wuyi high school. I studied hard every day and listened to my teachers carefully. I studied with a flashlight on my bed after other students had slept and got up earlier than other to study. In addition, I often studied during class break and eating time that sometimes I forgot to eat. I wanted to pass the score line badly to help my parents save money because passers will be paying only RMB 2,000 instead of the RMB 4,000 per year tuition fee. That time, I tried my best to study without doing any bad thing. In the test of every month, I was always in the first twenty students on the score rank. Finally, I got a good grade in the exam to go to Wuyi high school. I saved money for my parents and gave them a successful result. Wuyi high school was beautiful, just like a university. There were more than 10,000 students. It had four lakes and many trees in the campus, and all the buildings had more than two levels. I could enjoy delicious food and live with seven boys in one room with air conditioner and restroom. I thought the better living conditions could give me a better study life. In addition, this high school was famous for supplying lots of students for famous universities in China. I thought I could study there simply. In fact, it’s not true. Students who had good exam grade could go to this school with cheaper tuition fees, but students who were bad guys from all the state could still come to it with expensive fees. So if they can pay the tuition fee, there was no problem getting to Wuyi high school. I tried my old junior high school ways at Wuyi high school. The rules were not much different so breaking them was not so difficult. I went back to fighting since some of the bad guys from junior high school were still my classmates. Just the same, all problems were solved with fighting and we became like gangsters in school. We controlled other students in the three grades, and even my sister was involved in this kind of stuff too. Even though I behaved badly after class, I was an excellent student in the classroom. I got the best grade in the whole grade one all the time. The students who liked to study always found me to ask questions, and they weren’t scared of me because they knew that I was a friendly and sensible person. I never forget my parents’ love, so I motivate myself to study hard. The only problem was that I could notkeep myself away from fighting. In grade two at Wuyi high school, things became different. For a change, I went to dancing in the school. After class, I practice with my teammates and for the entire year I was able to draw myself away from fights. It was a good thing that I did not get involve in a fight for one year. Grade three was my last year in this school, and also it was my peak time in my school. I continued to dance after class. The most important exam in every student’s life called Gaokao was coming. Gaokao is a college entrance examination in China. We had to use this score to evaluate us if we could go to universities. All the students in grade three tried their best to prepare for the exam. I also had to work hard because I didn’t want to upset my parents. My life was filled with dancing, fight and study, so I was very busy at that time. A few months before the Gaokao, I made another huge mistake. Again, I involved myself in a fight for the sake of revenge for my best brother. Unfortunately, one of the students saw us terribly beat eight students and informed our president about it. After finding out about it, the president expelled me for breaking all the school rules, most specially, for fighting. Because of that, my chance to take the Gaokao and to go to my dream university was gone. I went home full of regret for what happened and my father was sad and angry at me. There was no way to go to university in China, so he decided to send me to go to a university in the U.S. After six months, I came to the University of Kansas. For so many years I neglected my chance of becoming a good student. And looking back, I realized that what I did, like fighting and partying like crazy, in simpler terms, throwing my future away, had to stop. I already lost my chance on the Gaokao, I am not going to miss out on my chance in KU now. Apart from this, my parents have given me so much and I should return their love by finishing school. After all the realizations, I helped myself become a better student, as well as an individual. With a newfound direction in life, I hope that I will be a successful person in the future. Read More
