Our Town Memo Town Council Mayor CC: 9/6/16 Re: Daycare Program for Unwed Teenage Mothers Our town has received a federal grant to fund a daycare program for unwed teenage mothers. The purpose of this grant is for these unwed teenage mothers to continue their education.
Two possibilities can be used to implement this plan. The first is to use an offsite daycare. Under this possibility, a local daycare, Step by Step, would take the children for the school day. This will allow the mothers free daycare. The federal grant money would go to the professional daycare.
Step by Step encourages this option. They fully support the daycare program for unwed teenage mothers. The good side to this option is the children would be in a professional daycare. The drawback is transportation. Mothers would have to have transportation to school and the daycare twice a day. Although the daycare bus runs to the elementary, they do not have a route running at the high school.
The second possibility is to incorporate a daycare at the high school. A room for the children could be set aside with fully licensed daycare workers and the mothers to take care of the children. The mothers would have one hour classes and receive credit for home economics as an elective.
This option is supported by the town’s school. The benefit is mothers and children will be at the same site during the day. Babies and children can ride in car seats on regular buses. Another benefit is breastfeeding mothers will have access to their children. The one hour classes a day in the nursery will also provide the teenagers with guidance on how to feed, clean, and take care of their babies.
There are two groups who have voiced concern. The first is the PTA at the school. Their concern is unwed teenage mothers might influence the other girls to have babies. I disagree. If babies and toddlers are at the school, maybe regular girls without children can take the home economics class. These girls would soon realize how uncool and complicated having a baby can be.
The second group that has voiced concerns is the First Baptist Church. They also feel this is setting a bad example. I would hate to remind them how many of their daughters are unwed and mothers. I would also like to point out that many of these mothers, now older did not receive an education. These women work low level jobs and live in poverty. Only a few without education have succeeded in marriage or career. They are the exception, not the rule. In the end, the federal grant allows us to have this program.
The organization I have chosen will be the school system. This is the easiest choice for transportation and location. However, I believe this will be the best example on what it really is like for unwed mothers. It will also help the mothers with their high school education and mother education.
In the end, unwed teenage mothers have the same right to an education as the other girls. If this makes it easier for them to be successful and not live in poverty, then our town should support them. We are in the business of making productive citizens, not setting our children up to fail over a mistake. Read More

Colfax Avenue, Suite 600 Denver, CO 80202 Letter to the Denver Post Vincent Carroll’s article that appeared in the Denver Post on 9/22/2010, brings to light controversy between federal government laws and state laws regarding drug abuse. An analysis of the case against Bartkowicz regarding marijuana cultivation and use was made. My response will stress on the differences and similarities between federal law and state law regarding marijuana. This is to show that the case is not a gross injustice and hence no need to do away with amendment 20 as a defense. The audience should be aware of what is contained in the Colorado’s medical- marijuana... Cherry...
