During my junior year of high school, our financial circumstances were so bad that my mother had to send me back to China. She assured me that this was a temporary measure and I would be with her soon. My return to the US after a traumatic year of separation has further spurred my efforts to fulfill my mother’s ambitions. I finished high school with honors, and still dogged by financial difficulties, decided to enrol at a community College. Along the way I have worked in various capacities as a delivery driver, an office recruiting clerk in the US Bureau of census and as an interpreter because there are a large number of Mandarin speakers in our community, and I speak fluent Mandarin. I am graduating this year after a two year stint from the Tidewater Community College with an associate degree in Business Administration. I am proud of the fact that despite all the unfavorable circumstances, I have managed to achieve a GPA of 4.00, and also bag the prestigious President’s Roll of Honor at Tidewater Community College. It was while I was in college that I happened to visit an estate auction with a friend. This exposure to the real estate business started me thinking of how important a home is in a person’s life. Having gone through the insecurity of not knowing how long we would have a roof over our heads, and wondering when we would be able to own a place we could call home; the idea of helping someone to own their dream home appealed to me. That was the beginning of my own small business venture. This new business venture honed my organizational and communication skills. My hard work and determination to succeed have paid off and today I sell everything from bicycles to houses.  ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Mary Wollstonecraft on Education

Understanding that women are just as able as men in many capacities and some very important ways that she excels causes one to realize that no one should be able to take her rights away. It is the mother who gives protection for the initial nine months to the divine creative force of nature – regardless of whether the offspring is male or female. But what is prescribed in various secular and spiritual texts and what is practiced in society currently are contradictory. A female child is victimized during every step of her life, from the moment of birth, notwithstanding the fact that it is she who sacrifices at those stages. Women need to be the social, spiritual and legal equals of men. These were the arguments that Mary Woll...

Approach to Education: Comparison of Philosophies of A S Neill & Paul Hirst

He believed that to impose anything by authority is wrong. The child should not do anything until he comes to an opinion – his own opinion- that it should be done. He states clearly his commitment to freedom of a child: ‘we set out to make a school in which we should allow children to be themselves. In order to do this, we had to renounce all discipline, all directions, all suggestions, all moral training, and all religious instruction. The child should never be forced to learn, Attendance at lessons should be voluntary whatever the age of the child. Only learning that is voluntarily undertaken has any value, and children will know themselves when they are ready to learn. (Summerhill , p.37)

Juvenile Delinquency and Education: A Comparison of Public and Private Education

.... These are the results by the N.I.E Study that interschool academic competition does indeed tend to decrease school violence. This finding is very much relevant to the lingering private/public debate. But this also poses a hindrance in modern day teaching approaches in regards to academics. Schools and educators prefer not to induce competition into students but rather healthy, co-operative learning atmospheres. Ironically enough, it is the private schools which have argued that the older system of competition amongst students in education is useful indeed. Another finding of the N.I.E is that schools which are larger “tend to experience more violence and vandalism than smaller ones.” (West)The reason for this may be that private schools...

Management Theory and Practice in the Early Childhood Education Industry

...Management Theory and Practice in the early childhood education industry This Report applies management theory into practice in the early childhood industry, especially in the context of women leaders. Management issues play a significant role in the academic sector, because early childhood professionals need higher levels of motivation in order to avoid burnout . As pointed out in a study by Osgood and Halsall (2007) where they carried out research to examine the position of women in leadership or management positions, a “glass ceiling” exists for women in the academic setting, which could significantly impair motivation. Since many of the individuals employed in the early education sector are women, addressing this issue is even more...

Socialization in Education Perspective

Self-sensation is one of the basic human characteristics and humans develop it in the earliest stages of life. It is an awareness of those characteristics that form the personality of an individual. A child starts to realize the circumstances around him and begins to perceive different relations in a specific way. Self-sensation means to perceive and observe different behaviors of people. It is very difficult to change the self-sensation of a person in the later stages of life. Scientists, who have done research in this field, also believe that self-sensation can never be changed because it is formed in the earliest stages of a person’s life. The formation of self-sensation highly depends on the interaction between the child...
