This book talks about the qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies depending on each form of inquiry: it deals right from the initial stage of philosophical assumptions to the writing and presentation of the research paper. In keeping with the mixed method approach on the subject of educational research, which is what this paper examines; the greatest challenge higher education faces in the future are issues of funding and searching for authentic funding agencies; availability of relevant materials in one’s hometown (Metros and big cities have an advantage over people from smaller towns and villages who need to relocate sometimes); availability of research guides; issue of limited seats in common entrance exams for Fellowship purpose; accessibility of research materials, especially journals, often leading to time-consuming processing of limited sponsorships to visit those places to get the relevant journals; issue with library access to rare books and consequent time wastage while waiting for library loans to be processed; availability and access to labs with state-of-the-art infrastructure and technology, and issues with unaided research especially for science students where they would need to visit labs every day and cannot devote time to anything else.
The issues stated above are real-time challenges experienced and observed by an eminent college professor; who has been teaching English to university students for the last 5 years (Anonymous, 2011). In fact, due to issues with lengthy processing of library loans and lack of proper access to journals and other relevant research materials, she had to visit London on applied sponsorship for about two months to get access to those rare journals and books in order to complete her thesis paper on time. ...to a need to clarify the intent of mixing qualitative and quantitative data in a single study (or a program of study). With the inclusion of multiple methods of data and multiple forms of analysis, the complexity of these designs calls for more explicit procedures. These procedures also developed in part to help researchers create understandable designs out of complex data and analyses.” (Creswell, 2003, p. 208). The mixed methods research helps the researchers in learning more about the research topic by combining the strengths of both the qualitative and quantitative research...

...of the extraneous factors that could jeopardize validity of findings include history, reactive or interaction effects. (Creswell, 1994 and Weinreich, n.d.). It can generally be said that the use of mixed methods (in for instance forensic sciences) ensures reliability of data collection tools, integrity of data and validity of research findings. In essence, it ensures complementarities among the two methods (quantitative and qualitative). However, the informality of the data collection process could increase subjectivity and thus reduce integrity of data. References Creswell, J.W. (1994). Methods And Design Of Mixed Methods Research
...Methods And Design Of Mixed Methods Research For many decades, research studies in the social and behavioral sciences have been mono-method; either quantitative or qualitative. A group of researchers, known as purists, believe that the two methods come from different assumptions and that the two cannot be incorporated or combined in a single study. They claim that one method cannot support the other in one study. On the other side, a contemporary group of researchers, known as pragmatist, believes that the two research methods can actually be combined to give better, more reliable results. They focus on the...

...). In a research field, the results are valued differently according to the use or importance of the outcome. According to Tashakkori, & Teddlie (2003), in a mixed research, an investigator applies both qualitative and quantitative study technique to obtain detailed and reliable information about a particular matter. This may occur at two levels. First, it may occur as a “single approach design” whereby the results obtained in a particular approach are improved by employing the other technique to acquire additional information. The other one is “mixed approach designs” where the researcher separates...

...Mixed methods research Mixed methods research As seen in the work of Collins, Onwuegbuzie & Jiao (2007) a mixed methods research refers to a research design that involves collecting and analyzing data through using both the qualitative and quantitative methods and and approaches in a one study, all in an attempt to understand the research problem. Since the mixed methods research is all inclusive as Creswell (2013) indicates, this form of research can be applied in all forms of fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy and even in...

It is important to note the different strengths and weakness of the mixed methods design strategy. The strengths of this method include the ability of the...

...typically begin by asking "what is the variation in" (Amelina, 2012). Descriptive research questions are essential for the quantitative research in answering this topic. For instance, how much CO2 results from Freight transport emissions. The descriptive research question will attempt to find out the quantity or amount of CO2. Question 4 Mixed methods research questions apply various explicit philosophical positions. These positions are the perspectives caused by different beliefs that researchers hold on to (Noble &Bestley, 2011). However, mixed research method gives an opportunity for the...
