Plan to Pursue at the University of California
The world’s global organizations are almost always influenced by economic factors. Economics has profoundly been recognized as a broad-ranging disciple encompassing wide range perspectives in theory and practice. In this regard, I have always been intrigued by economics as a field of endeavor which I plan to pursue at the University of California.
It is the remarkable privilege accorded me by my aunt who gave me the opportunity to work in Li and Fung Trading Ltd during the summer of 2005. I was sent to Shanghai to work in one of the branches of the trading company and to learn the rudiments of how a marketing company operates. Also, since my aunt is a businesswoman, working as an executive director in Li and Fung Trading Ltd, one of the largest trading logistics company in the world, I gained enough orientation and perspectives on economics in terms of both micro and macro economic exposures of the firm’s trading relationships with other institutions and its effect on the macro level.
As a marketing trainee, I realized the importance of understanding the theoretical framework and concepts on economics as various economic models assist in understanding real word business implications of trading and could assist in predicting organizational behavior, in general. I am aware that by pursuing a degree in economics, I would be accorded the opportunity to be illuminated on economic problems and factors affecting organizations including policy design and analysis of alternatives to make the appropriate decisions which would maximize profits and growth potentials.
The involvement with Li and Fung Trading Ltd provided the impetus for a more determined stance to pursue a degree in Economics. I was made more aware that most organizational problems can be analyzed and evaluated through an economic analysis approach and the kind of solutions that economic principles suggest are enormous and diverse. I would like to be instrumental in assisting my current and future organizations in determining effective solutions to problems through a better understanding of the local economy, national and world’s most pressing problems and the determination of appropriate approach to solve these problems though economic perspectives.
Through working with Li and Fung Trading Ltd, I developed the necessary discipline and skills to pursue higher education. Through interrelationships with colleagues and groups, I developed group and interpersonal skills, as well as communication skills needed in academic disciplines. I would like to improve on my analytical skills which I am sure that the University of California could accord. I admire the mission of University of California “to serve society as a center of higher learning, providing long-term societal benefits through transmitting advanced knowledge, discovering new knowledge, and functioning as an active working repository of organized knowledge”. I believe that my involvement in my present organization triggered my desire to pursue Economics as my major to be of better service to the society which I ultimately aim to improve.
Since I started by personal statement with Alan Greenspan’s quotation, let me likewise end it with this: “The true measure of a career is to be able to be content, even proud, that you succeeded through your own endeavors without leaving a trail of casualties in your wake” - Alan Greenspan Read More
