Improving Skills in English - Essay Example

Dear Lisa Spears, In this I have learned quite a bit and improved the skills I had already. There are many things that I need to work on but I am stronger in all areas than I was at the beginning. The English language is complex and I found it difficult to master the way to structure sentences properly. I am often confused about the placement of the verbs and must focus on this when writing or conversing with someone. There also seems to be quite a few ways to shorten or combine nouns and verbs which is something one can only memorize.

For example one could say “I’m” instead of “I am”, dropping a letter and making one word, both noun and verb, this is something that can only be mastered with experience. Another thing that one can become skilled at only through practice is the spelling of certain words. This is definitely one of my major weaknesses, especially when trying to spell words where an ‘i’ and an ‘e’ are beside each other. There is a definite rule about the placement but there seems to be so many exceptions that the rule appears, to the amateur, to be irrelevant.

These things can only be improved with practice and, luckily, my main strength is the understanding of English. I can easily follow when reading and when people are speaking I am able to maintain a conversation with ease. Therefore, the more I listen and read and understand the more I will learn how to properly spell and how to structure my sentences in the best way possible. My weaknesses will grow stronger as my strength improves.
