Do you consider conflict resolution to be a solution to all conflicts that occur in schools? Why or why not? Conflict resolution is a method orprocess applicable to conflicts arising in any place whether it is school or work place. Generally speaking, conflict resolution is applicable to all conflicts occurring in schools. The reason for this is, in conflict resolution process itself , the method to combat conflict is detailed. In general, conflicts can be of many types and the ways to deal with conflicts differ in various ways.

However the process of dealing with conflicts is stated in the conflict solution method itself. If a conflict occurs in a school, the authorities need to apply the conceptual method detailed in the conflict resolution keeping in mind the nature of the conflict. According to (Ghaffar,2013, pg.213 – 21)“Conflict presently continues to be a factor in academic life. Schools frequently appear to be centers of tension; on occasion, they are perhaps manifestation of problems in the community”.

At first the nature of conflict must be addressed and then the method of conflict resolution as negotiation, peace building, diplomacy and other methods can be applied to conflict to resolute it.In a school conflicts can arise between students and between teachers and students or among school employees itself. In all cases, the nature of conflict decides the method or process of conflict resolution to be applied. Conflict resolution is not related to one method but many methods which can be applied to different conflicts.

Conflict resolution can be also referred to as dispute resolution and hence all types of conflicts or disputes in school can be resolved by it. 2. Are there types of students or students of certain grade levels who might not respond to conflict resolution? What maturational, social/emotional, or cognitive factors could affect the success of conflict resolution? The conflicts arise between students among all age group or grade levels. However, students of certain grade levels or age level , might not well respond to conflict resolution This group are mainly very young students who comes in the age range of 4 to 7 years and those who are little matured as 14 and 15 years.

Those students in 4 to 7 years of age range are too young to understand the seriousness of the conflict and cannot comprehend the matters with ease, They are less able to understand issue and problems and cannot react to conflict resolutiions. In the same manner, the students in between 14 and 15 years has the problem of impatience, misunderstanding, ego and immaturity, so they react negatively to conflict resolutions. In a resolving a conflict, many a times negotiation, diplomacy and peace generating factors need to be applied and this is possible only if the parties involved in the conflict are mature.

In case of diplomatic talks, the parties in conflict need to have cognitive ability to understand the key elements in the discussion. In the same way, people who are taking initiative to solve the conflict need to have social or emotional element in them to build up peace in theconflict. The effectiveness of a conflict resolution largely depend upon the analysis of the nature of conflict. As per (Seagal, 2013)“Conflict triggers strong emotions and can lead to hurt feelings, disappointment, and discomfort.

When handled in an unhealthy manner, it can cause irreparable rifts, resentments, and break-ups”. 3. Are there types of conflict that could be negotiated and resolved, but only if mediated by adults rather than by peer mediators? Explain your rationale. In a school, conflicts of many types can occur, sometimes it can be between students or between teacher and students or among teacher itself. All conflicts cannot be negotiated or resolved as we perceive. In cases where the teachers assault students, the matter is serious and intervention by students alone cannot make any difference.

When a teacher abuses a students or act rude to a student, then the conflict is serious. In such cases, the teacher or head of the school need to be involved.to make the teacher and the students understand and discuss the matter more deeply. Here a student cannot resolve the conflict, only an adult can do it. In this matter, teachers, head of school and parents of the student might need to attend to resolve the issue. If a student dislike his teacher, then there is an obligation on the parents to check why disinterest occurring between the child and teacher.

As per (Ghezzi,2013)“When your child says her teacher doesn’t like her, ask for specific examples. Then you can determine whether she is exaggerating the conflict or whether a problem really exists”. So other teachers and head of school need to be analyzing the matter more closely. Even when there is dispute among teachers and authorities regarding remuneration , then even the owner of school need to involved in this matter. So depending on the conflict , sometimes adult need to be intervening in the issue to resolve it.
