The book is organized thematically according to the four basic themes Adam identifies within his work. These themes include civilization, education, response and causatum. The theme of civilization within the schools was highlighted through the enhanced assimilation policy which saw the life of many students change. For example it can be noted that the Carlisle students praised the policy, they learnt foreign language and changed their lifestyles through interactions that made them learn other cultures and thus making them better and civilized. The theme of education is perhaps the major highlighted theme, in terms of how it transforms societies into new civilization. The theme of response becomes apparent in the assessment of how students from different backgrounds responded to the new forms of integrated education within boarding schools. The observed responses were varying and both positive and negative. The theme shows how the students reacted to the issues of change .Others objected while others accepted. For example Navajo Frank Mitchell and his comrades insisted speaking their native language (Adams 199). Causatum as a theme explored the influence of the programs in boarding schools on the students’ assimilation policy which achieved a lot for the life of the students which changed.eg listening to preaching. The purpose of Adam’s work is implied, by the information that it tries to portray in terms of the four highlighted themes. He does not directly state what the books is out do as would be in a research, but lets the readership infer from his findings as to what he tends to portray. The implications inferred from Adam’s work serve to accomplish Adam’s purpose and indeed, they do that well. The book’s organization takes a thematic mode of flow that is outlined according to the four themes that are earlier mentioned. The book is very well written and flows in a clear manner that draws and takes the audience through the step-by-step researches and inquiry of the author. The book is actually most suited and probably intended for the students undertaking intercultural studies, Indian-White relations studies as well as federal policy analysts and formulators (Adams 73). The work is well outlined with no bias because it does not seem to make outright favors in any highlighting of major themes and issues of the work. The book’s greatest strength is the balanced approach and stand that it takes on issues and the strong evidence that it presents from the researches conducted by Adam. It also has high objectivity because it strictly sticks to the major issues of highlight. The books’ only simple weakness is the fact that, like earlier similar literary work and research, it fails to present any mention on issues related to boarding schools ran by Christian bodies. According to Adams (64), the last solution to Indian problem was introduction of government boarding schools where students were required to stay in school and follow the laid down formalities and not their cultural requirements.
