According to ERIC Digest, a student’s family upbringing and economic status affect the student’s performance level (Zill, Collins, West, and Hausken, 1995). They could also base their decision on how that student’s teacher teaches his or her class. Since there is no definite reason for why some student’s performance rate is low, researchers are still puzzled on reasons to explain such differences in scores. One factor that has been on the rise lately is the divorce and layoffs that the children have to go through in their homes.
8 This study hypothesizes that students coming from traditional (household with both original parents) families seem to do better than non-traditional families. My study will examine a mixed church youth group whose members will bring in their previous EOC or EOG scores. When comparing the scores the main factor will be to look at their family structure to explain the change in academic achievement and its link with the changes in family structures. 8 Whilst doing this research, if there is a tremendous difference in the academic achievement of the two groups, then the president of the church’s youth committee will use the results of the study to create an after-school program to assist students in their school work and cope with the family changes in their home.
The after-school program will consist of: after-school tutoring, counseling sessions, and a mentoring program. 8 Purpose 9 This study is designed to identify whether there are differences in EOC and EOG test scores of students from traditional households and students from divorced and/or low-income households. The students to be studied are members church youth group in North Carolina. 9 The church understudy has a tradition of recognizing and praising excelling for acquiring good grades and good scores on their end-of-year testing.
Over the years, there has been a decrease in the students attaining high achievements in school and we want to help these students get back on track. Some reasons for the decrease could be that someone in the students’ immediate families has lost his or her job, undergone a divorce, or have lost a husband or wife.
