Design and Position Student Name Course Institution Date Introduction The field of design requires a lot of commitment from the individual concerned. This is because of the demand that the field has in terms of coming up with an acceptable design. The individual is fully responsible for the outcome of the design. Although a person may gain knowledge during the course of studying about the design, the knowledge is not enough. The flexibility of the concepts of the design requires more than the knowledge acquired during the study. A designer has to be creative in order to utilize the knowledge gained from the study because the designs are never straight forward and an individual has to come up with the design personal (Jantsch, et al, 2009). It is also the responsibility of the individual to come up with a design that will be appealing to the clients. Some of the designs have been rejected by clients due to the failure of the individual to come up with creative designs. It is for this reason that the design is fully dependant on the personal beliefs as well as the preferences and prejudices of the individual. The filed of design and architecture also requires personal interest in the job in order to be successful due the complexity nature of the design. It is therefore important for the individual to be up to the task in order to be successful in the field of design. The quality of the design is also important for the purpose of ensuring customer and personal satisfaction. The paper discusses the influence of an individual in coming up with a good design as well as the concepts of a good design. Influence of position in design The extent of knowledge in design influences the outcome of the design. This is because the extent of knowledge is closely related to the experience of the individual. Experience determines the quality and outcome of the design. A highly experienced individual easily comes up with a good design. This is because the extent of knowledge is high for an experienced individual. Through experience, an individual is able to detect errors within the design. The creative ability of the individual is also enhanced through the experienced gained. An individual who is not experienced is prone to errors during the design. This affects the quality of the work done and it may end up being rejected. It is through experience that the knowledge is enhanced. Personal set of beliefs is also influential in the process of design. The personal beliefs contribute to the ability of the designer being creative. Motivation is also important during the design process. The personal beliefs act as a motivation for the performance of the individual during the process of design. The personal beliefs also influence the individual in terms of developing interest in the design process. This is because some of the individuals in the design sector only engaged in the process due to external influence. This generates low levels of morale as well as low interest in the process. Most of the people who come up with poor designs lack positive self beliefs in the process and hence the negative impacts. Positive self beliefs lead to good quality work in most cases (Nemoto, et al, 2009). The personal set of beliefs also determines the outcome of the design as it influences the designer. This is because the personal set of beliefs guides the individuals in terms of creativity ion the design. The designer uses the self belief as a tool for coming up with the design. This is because the designer comes up with a certain design because he or she beliefs that the design will result to a positive outcome for the job and hence satisfying the clients. This is considering that the design is dependant on the individual who has to start the design with little information. Since there are no formulas of for coming up with a specific design, the design is purely dependant on the individual. The outcome of the design is thus closely related to the personal beliefs. The assumptions made by the individual also determine the quality and outcome of the design. This is because a lot of assumptions have to be made by the individual during the design process. Some of the assumptions may lead to positive results while others may lead to negative results and hence impacting the design process. The quality of the design is also dependant on the assumptions made. The assumptions also influence the process of customer satisfaction. During the design process, the designers make assumptions with the customer satisfaction issues in mind. Wrong assumptions complicate the design process and hence affecting the quality of the design. On the other hand the assumptions may result to problems during the implementation process of the design. The assumptions made therefore leads to a certain outcome for the design (Douligeris, et al, 2010). The preferences and prejudices also influence the individual during the design process and hence impacting on the design. During the design process, several choices are usually available. This is because there is no specific design and it depends on the individual. The designer therefore has to choose the most appropriate design that will satisfy the customers. The preference of the designer is also influenced by the requirements of the customers as well as other external factors. It is thus the responsibility of the designer to choose the best form of design in order to satisfy the customers. It is thus for this reason that designs always varies from on individual to another. Preferences therefore play an important role in influencing the outcome of the design. It also influences the customer satisfaction with regard to the design. Prejudice also plays an important role in determining the outcome of the design. This is because the designer has his or her own feeling regarding a certain issue of design. The designer may have some attitude towards a certain religion or group. This influences the outcome of the design while working for the group. Negative attitudes towards a certain group can be detected from the outcome of the design. It is for this reason that most of the religious groups or individuals prefer certain designers as opposed to others. However, prejudice can also impact negatively on the entire design process. Preference and prejudice there has impacts on the quality of the design (Al Ariss, 2010). How a good design can be recognized A good design is dependant on the characteristics that it possesses. The outcome of the design determines the quality of the design. Customer satisfaction is on of the characteristics of a good design. The design should be in a position to receive approval of the clients. The members of the public should also endorse the design. This is despite the influences that the designer had to undergo. A good design is therefore one that attracts the members of the public as well as satisfies the client. A good design should always put into consideration various factors that will positively influence the implementation process. The design should support the environmental concerns during its implementation. This is because most of the designs have negative impacts on the environment during its implementation and hence effecting the environment. This is regardless of the importance of environmental concepts in the modern world. A good design is always creative and innovative in nature. It should not have the elements of other previous designs and hence being repetitive. Innovation in this case should involve new concepts within the design. It is important to note that the current needs of the customers differ from the previous needs. It is for this reason that a design should portray elements of creativity and innovations. Innovativeness is also important in terms of coming up with new and innovative ideas. A good design is thus important in terms of ensuring that the customers are satisfied with the works (Booker, 2012). A good design is also neutral and doe not impact negatively on a certain group or society. This is especially when dealing with designs for the religious groups or certain groups in the societies. The implementation of the design is also an import ant aspect of determining the ability of a design to be good. A costly design may raise difficulties during the implementation process. This may have negative impacts on the client who has to implement the design. A good design is also realistic and it has al the required features pout in place. This is because the failure of including all the features will always result to problems during the implementation period. A good design should also be clear and easy to understand the concepts used. This is for the purpose of avoiding problems during the Implementation period. These characteristics should be applicable despite the position of the designer. All the requirements should be clearly indicated on the design. It is also important to ensure that no single item is left out in the design as it will lead to problems during the implementation phase. Accuracy is also an important concept of design. A design has to be accurate and should be free of any error. A design with errors is not worthy as it will end up failing the project. It is thus important for the design to be completely free from any errors and hence accuracy. The lack of accuracy has led to the wastage of funds when implementing the designs. It is evident that a good design should be able to meet several qualities and conditions for it to be considered as a good design (Collyer, 2011). A good design should be of high quality and standards. This means that the design has to meet al the legal requirements as well the any other law that guides the design process. The failure of the design to meet the requirements always lowers the standards of the design. The standards should also be met regardless of the payment by the client. Health concerns should also be put into consideration during the design process. This is because the design must always have an impact on the health of the people. The design should also ensure that toxic materials should not be used during the implementation of the design. This is because the toxic materials will impact negatively on the health of the people. A good design is must therefore ensure that the health considerations are put in place. The ability of a design to be re-used in other projects is also one of the characteristics of a good design. This is because the re-use reduces the cost of designing and hence benefiting the client as well as the designer. A good design also ensures that the resources are well utilized during the implementation period. This plays an important t role in terms of ensuring that the costs are minimized during the implementation process. Clear guidelines should also be outlined in the design for the purpose of ensuring that the implementation process is successful. It is thus evident that the outcome of the design is important regardless of the factors influencing the designer (Hodgkinson, et al, 2009). Criteria for designing the quality of a design The criteria of determining whether the design is good or not depends on number of factors that are closely related to the quality of the design. Customer satisfaction should be one of the criteria that can be used to determine whether the design is good or not. Once the customer approves the design it means that it has met the requirements in terms of quality. This should thus be one of the factors that should be used in terms of determining the quality of the design. On the other hand, the approval of the design by the relevant authorities is an indication that the design has meet al the legal requirements as well as the standards. Once a design has met the standards, it can be considered successful. It is for this reason that the standards and legal compliance should used as a criteria for determining quality of the design. However, it is important to note that the compliance alone cannot be used as a factor to determine the quality of the design. This is because a design can meet all the legal requirements but fail to satisfy the customers. The ability of the design to meet the health and environment needs should also be one of the criteria for determining whether the design is good or not. This is because the design is only good when it can be implemented without affect the people involved during the implementation process. It is thus important to note that the environmental and health needs determine the success of the implementation (Manzini, 2009). The cost of the design should also be one of the criteria to be used for the purpose of determining the quality of the design. This is because the cost determines whether the affordability of the customer and the ability of the designer to utilize the available resources to come up with the design. The cost in relations to the design should thus be considered as one of the criteria for determining the whether a design is good or not. It is also important to consider the opinion of the public regarding the design as one of the criteria for determining the quality of the design. This is because the design may have social implications and hence leading to negative perceptions. This could be as a result of prejudice from the designer. The public opinion should thus define the design and it determines the success of the design. It is thus important to note that the public opinion can ensure the success of the design. On the other hand, poor publicity can hinder the success of the design. The accuracy of the design should also be one of the criteria for determining the quality of the design. This is because of the effects that the low levels of accuracy can lead when it comes to the implementation. The presence of errors in the design should also be used to determine whether the design is good or not. A design free of errors is considered to be of good quality (Arvola, 2010). Green sustainability is one of the most important concepts of in the modern times. It is for this reason that any architectural project requires an environmental impact assessment. This is for the purpose of determining whether the project will impact negatively on the environment. The ability of the design to comply with green sustainability should thus be used as a criterion for determining whether the design is good or not. The rate of innovativeness is in the design should also be one of the criteria for determining the quality of the design. Innovativeness is an indication that the design is of good quality. Innovation plays an important role in terms of ensuring that the design meets the future demands. Innovation is also important in terms of determining the quality of design in relation to the designer. The creativity is also important in determining the quality of the design. Creativity should also be used as a criteria for determining the whether the design is good or not. It is also important to note that creativity is important in terms of communicating the ideas of the designer. It is also important to consider the aspects of flexibility in the design. This is due to the presence of unforeseen circumstances that may lead to changes in the design during the implementation period. The criteria for determining the quality of the design determines whether the design is good or not. However, one aspect alone cannot be used as criteria for determining whether the design is good or not. It is important for the combination of factors to be used as a criterion (Lenssen, 2012). Conclusion In conclusion, the personal position of the designer when coming up with the design influences the quality of the design. It is therefore evident that the designers always come up with different designs due to the differences in personalities. It is for this reason that the designs are always different among different people. However, the factors that lead to the success of a design are quite diverse. Several criteria can be used for the purpose of classifying the quality of the design. It is also evident that the quality of the design can generate different opinions from different people. It is essential for the designers to consider several factors before beginning the process.
