The interior designers are now working with other artists including architects to successfully achieve a common goal which is a working and aesthetically appealing building. Artists are now required to educated and be well versed in a variety of skills like decorative arts and graphic design. In their practice, they must adhere to certain regulations like the safety issues and structural requirements. To achieve all these, they are using technology as the use of computer aided design. The profession which is around a hundred years old started as decoration art and the acceptance of form and use. These went on growing and gaining popularity. In 1931, the first largest professional organization guarding the profession was found which was a mark of the rapidly growing business across the world. The trade gained popularity which led even to the enactment of laws to guard against the United States of America being the first country to enact the law in 1982. Today, it’s a profession guarded by law and requires someone to be well educated and be versed with various designs to practice it. In the past, interior design was so imported such that people were taking their time to decorate their huts with drawings of trees and animals such as lions. People from different parts of the world like the Egyptians made the further effort by making simple furniture use and occupy the empty spaces. They used expensive materials like animal skins and mosaic floors to decorate their houses. Interior design can be traced back in 1900 when it was being referred as to interior decoration, a term first used by Americans. The term interior decorator changed to interior design in early 1930’s. This came into being when the term was employed in a particular interior decoration magazine famously known as ‘Interior Design and decoration.' The first interior designer to be awarded an artist commission was Elsie Wolfe in 1913. She was also the first artist to publish an interior design magazine known as ‘The House in Good Taste.' One Dorothy Draper became the first decorator to documented as a commercial interior designer. She established her design company in the year 1923. Interior decoration started when man settled in caves. Before that, we can say that there was no design. When this settlement started, it came with different fields of design which included the artists, architects, and the designers. There was no specialization as one person could do all the tasks of design. With the evolvement of humankind towards the 19th century, specialization began where artists, architects, and designers were separated. Artists mainly specialized in the area of the technical drawing. This included the drawings of house plans, elevations, and specifications which are now days used to instruct the contractors of buildings. With the artists, they mainly specialized in the area of the nontechnical drawing. This included pictures of visual images like human designs, drawings of trees and animal drawing. This is the same case today. Designers were now different from architects and artists. Their area of specialization is mainly organizing the available space so as to ensure that it's aesthetically appealing and most fundamentally that our designs are working models. Today design has become a necessity to humankind. This is one thing that inspires designers. They know that their job is something crucial in the life we are living today. When developers come up with impressive designs which everyone appreciates, they get motivated. They try to come up with more impressive designs which people would enjoy. The designing job is well paying. Designers make the proper living from their work, and this motivates them more, it is evident that man tends to like money so much. Everyone would like to work in a place where they are well paid. Low paying jobs lower the morale of workers. Looking for the design job, it’s a job that requires just creativity; it doesn’t need someone to use a lot of physical effort, which is very tiresome. Considering this, designers get a lot of inspiration especially when they compare their job to others, for instance, mechanical job. In the past, artists were not educated. To some, designing was a talent, to others, it was a hobby while others inherited the work from their predecessors. After design had started and people saw its good outcome, they became interested in learning and starting creating things by themselves. This marked the beginning of design education. Those who were already in design started passing their skills to others. With the evolvement of man, formal education started, and the plan started being taught in schools. A syllabus for designers was introduced where new learners started by learning basic design. For instance drawing of straight lines, ovals, and circles. As the students advance, the syllabus offers more and more details in designing. At the end of the program, students are well versed with design tasks and can provide professional services to their clients. Designers are inventors. It's through their imagination that they create new things which never existed before. To start with, artists comes up with new and unique designs for different buildings. Different artists will always come up with the various designs for their buildings since their imagination can not be the same. Designers come up with new arrangements of furniture in a room. They arrange them in such a way that they both look appealing, and they are workable. Making sure that our space is well utilized allowing no wastage. Designers also come up with attractive drawings. They imagine of new things which don’t even exist like the monsters and draw them on papers. This is very impressive and makes design profession a unique and exciting one. No other profession has such fantastic characteristics. Gaudi is one prominent designer. He was born in 1852 at a place known as Reus. He had the passion for design which was mainly influenced by nature and his religion. Some of his most outstanding works are found in Barcelona. Some examples of these works include the Magnum Opus and Casa Pablo an apartment which he renovated between 1904 – 1906. In this essay, I will be talking much more about Gaudi including his styles of design. Le Corbusier is another old successful designer. He was born in 1887 in Switzerland. He later changed his citizenship to French in 1930. He was a talented architect, painter and was an expert in urban planning. The buildings he designed were constructed all over across Europe with one of his most outstanding job being the preparation of Chandigarh, a city in India. I will be discussing much more about Le Corbusier in this essay. Another remarkable designer of the 17th century is Walter Gropius. He was born in 1883 in Germany. He is one of the few artists who pioneered the modern Architecture. Gropius with others designed a shoe last factory which is a crucial founding monument of the modernization of Europe. He published a very impressive article which talked about how industrial buildings were developing during his time. I will be discussing more Groups in this essay. I will also be talking about Candy & Candy who are modern practitioners. Interior design, architecture, and art are related in several ways. Firstly, all of them involves creativity. Each one requires a specialist who can imagine and figure out new things which never existed before. Second, all of the three requires design. People practicing them must be well versed with all the elements of design. The design is the core concept that a person involved in any of the three must embrace. All the three requires drawing. The primary tool of communication for the three professions is drawings. One drawing on paper can communicate a message which can only be explained by at least a thousand words. This makes pictures be an important tool of communication in the three fields. Architecture mainly involves technical drawing, art primarily includes artistic image while interior design requires both artistic and architectural drawing. All the three professions have one common goal; the outcome should be aesthetically attractive, it should please the human eye. Practitioners of interior design, architecture and art are not bounded to stick to one field. If they wish to go and try other areas, they are free to do so. A good example of a practitioner who worked in several different fields of life is Le Corbusier. He was a successful Architect, interior designer, painter, urban planner and a writer too. In fact, most practitioners in these fields are open minded. Creative people can think outside what a common man can. They can think of new areas of working which are entirely different from their field of specialization. This is one thing that makes it difficult for many of them to stick to one area of expertise. They would like to implement the many ideas that flow in their mind. Moreover, having more than one type of job not only broadens someone’s way of thinking but also earns him an extra coin. Gaudi in his time had many successful projects. To start with, he renovated an apartment in Barcelona between the year 1904 and 1906. This apartment is still outstanding up to date especially its bright walls which perfectly reflects light. He was involved in many other projects which some of them include; designing for Placa Reial in Barcelona which made him very famous, he designed for the glove manufacturer Comella, he planned one of his most prominent work; the Guell wine cellars. Le Corbusier had a variety of projects. His buildings were constructed throughout Europe.one of his most remarkable works include preparing the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India. His other work includes finding with others a congress to for modern architecture, designing Dom-ino house between 1914 – 1915 using modern architectural techniques and writing a book ‘Towards the Modern Architecture.' Gropius had several projects in his time with the designing of a shoe last factory being one of his most outstanding works. Other works by Gropius include publishing of articles which talked about design issues and drawing of the great door handles which are usually considered as an icon of the 20th-century designs. Interior decorator mainly deals with the aesthetic part of design. His primary job is to add some beauty to the interior of the buildings, particularly on the walls. This is achieved by drawing on aesthetically attractive images on the walls of the buildings. It might be the pictures of animals, plants or human being. On the other hand, interior design deals with the arrangement of a room. This is the proper organization of furniture so that it fits properly and can allow room for maneuvering. The name interior design first came to use in early 1930’s when a magazine called ‘Interior Design & Decoration’ used it. Today’s modern interior design is just an evolvement of the work of the previous designers like Corbusier and Groupius. These ancient interior designers set the cornerstone of the contemporary design. Advanced practitioners borrow a lot from their work and what they do is just to improve. Gaudi was born in 1852 at a place known as Reus. His family has its origin in Auvergne region in the south part of France. It later relocated in Catalonia in the 17th century. Gaudi was a firm Christian, and he was baptized in the church of Saint Sere apostle in Reus. He went to a nursery school where he was being taught by a man called Francesc Berengue. He then joined Pianists school where he started demonstrating his artistic and design skills. Gaudi believed that his people were capable of being creative and embraced originality. His primary goal was to embrace individuality and being creative in life. His design was impressive and modern. It was functional and attracted many including Catalan Guell who later commissioned him some work which came out outstanding. For instance the Guell Palace. Le Corbusier was born in 1887 in Switzerland. He enrolled in a kindergarten that used frobelia methods. Le used modern techniques, columns, and concrete in his design. He later joined Fonds Art school where he learned architecture and art. He was particularly attracted to visual arts. He got the formal education from his Architecture teacher Architect Rene Chapallaz who made a lot of influence on the work of Le Corbusier. Le worked for several architects in Europe including Auguste Pewette who was the pioneer of reinforced concrete and the renowned Architect Peter Behrens. His designs were practical and sustainable. He reformed the whole idea of urban planning in 1930’s and came up with great and fantastic ideas which were of great help and still relevant today. Walter Gropius was born in 1883 in Germany. He grew in Berlin where he aspired to be an Architect as his father and uncle, Martin Gropius. He joined the architecture school in Munich and Berlin for four semesters. After his studies in 1908, he went to work for the renowned Peter Behrens who was an Architect and industrial designer. His primary objective was to unite art, technology, and craft. In 1910, he together with a clique, Adolf Naver quit their job and formed their company in Berlin. They came up with outstanding designs the most remarkable being the building known as Faguswerk in Alfeld Germany. It's modernism and functionality were exceptional. However, his work was interrupted by the first world war where he became a sergeant and then a lieutenant. He was able to get back into his career in 1918 when the world war one came to an end. This was now when he designed the up to now relevant door handle. One of Gaudi’s most outstanding works is found in Barcelona. One of these works includes the Magnum Opus and Casa Pablo an apartment which he renovated between 1904 – 1906. This apartment was mainly for rental purposes. His primary intention of renovating the apartment was to ensure that the flat was aesthetically pleasing. He achieved this as the building is still outstanding up to now. He joined different ceramics to make the finishing of the building. This made very attractive finishes which pleased many. Le Corbusier most excellent job is the preparation of Chadigarh master plan, a city in India. The master plan was prepared to ensure that the various buildings in the city were properly located. It would also ensure that the town was maneuverable by strategically locating roads and walkways where they were needed. This was achieved as Chadigarh is among the best-designed cities across the world. Le manually drew the master plan on papers and gave it to the contractors who were building the city. One of Walter Groprus striking work was the factory which is a crucial founding monument of the modernization of Europe. He together with others like Adolf Naver designed this outstanding building. Their intention was to build a modern structure which met both the functionality and aesthetic requirements. This was achieved as the building is one of the most outstanding monuments in Germany. Their relationship with the client was commercial as they wanted to make money out of their company operations. Looking at all the three historical designers, we find one common characteristic; they were all creative and determined to achieve what they imagined. They all focused on their work and aimed at making the two critical requirements of any design work, functionality and aesthetical requirements. They are the fathers of the modern design work. Today’s practitioners are continuing the work they started. There are just a few amendments for improving this task set by these historical architects. Today, there is a significant gap between architecture, interior design, art, and furniture. This is mainly due to work specialization at the middle of 20th century. Interior design education is of remarkable help when it comes to the field of interior designing. It has equated the practitioners in this area with all the relevant skills they require. Candy & Candy is a British luxury property developers company. It’s a joint venture of Nicholas Anthony Candy who was born in 1973 and Christian Peter Candy born in 1974. They both enrolled in a prior preparatory school Epsom College. Christian then joined the king’s college in London while Nick joined the University of Reading. They coined the name of the firm from their common name Candy. They started the company in 1995 where they bought a one- bedroom house worth $122,000. They renovated the flat using their interior design knowledge and skills and after the renovation, they were able to sell the building at a profit of over $50,000. This gave them the motivation to move on buying old flats, renovating them using design skills, and then selling them at a profit. In 2004, they came up with CPC Group in Guernsey which has enabled them to specialize in high-end residential developments all over the world. Their main clients are mainly people who are willing to buy and live in well designed comfortable rooms. One fundamental difference between them and the historical designers is that their work was primarily driven by commercial purposes while those of the old artists was motivated by their will of being creative and coming up new things. It's clear that both Candy & Candy and the historical designers used the same design approaches. One of their key projects is the Hyde Park.they bought a site of Bowater House in Knightsbridge in 2004 which they demolished and built 86 luxury apartments. They then joined a partnership with Waterknights company and hired an architect to design the exterior. They designed the interior parts of the building. Its construction lasted for four years. Their relationship with the client seems to be a perfect one. The role of the interior designer has developed over the years. In the past, interior designers had no area of specialization; it was like their roles were melted together with others for instance the architects. Nowadays, interior designers have a distinctive character which is only to deal with the interior designs. This can be seen clearly from Candy & Candy who hired an Architect to deal with the exterior designs while they were handling the interior design in their One Hyde Park project. The transformation of the role of the interior designers started in the middle of the 20th century. Different artists specialized in their areas of expertise. Architects started mainly dealing with exterior designs, artists with nontechnical drawings while interior designers mainly specialized in internal designing. The key thing that led to an evolution of the role of the interior designers is the need for specialization. Linking the past and the present, we can say that in both eras, the design jobs were mainly the same and the objectives of the designers was the same only that in the past, there was no specialization. Another notable fundamental difference is that in the past, the design was mainly done so that designers could showcase their creativity but nowadays, it's mainly done for commercial purposes.
